As I'm getting further and further into the science part of Feed the Beast, a question came up. A couple of weeks ago I saw a completely safe reactor setup with Ice, Condensers and Collectors. However, we don't have EE2 in the modpack (Ultimate), so I can't use this setup. Can anyone give me some advices on designs from the OUTSIDE of the reactor?
I've already planned how the inside of the reactor is supposed to be, but I see some people covering the whole structure with Water, and over that layer another one with lava. Is this a good setup? Or should I do something completely different, because I really want that reactor working :)

Thanks,

That's likely based on an older version of IC2, since changes were made that meant that putting ice in the reactor or surrounding it in water no longer have any effect on the reactor's temperature. The only outside design you might need now is some form of blast shield so that if your reactor goes into meltdown and explodes, it doesn't give you a nice new crater.
Three-thick walls of Reinforced Stone will practically guarantee no outside damage, though Thaumcraft Warded Stone and some of the MFFS force fields are also good choices.

Edit: Curses. Ninja'd.

That setup was REALLY REALLY old. Using ice or water will definitely not work anymore. The only thing that really matters outside the reactor is how you keep it from blowing up your builds for which I would recommend using some warded stone for so that you don't have to make three layers of reinforced stone.

and the new mark I reactors are really good, matching with older casuc-designs (the ones with the ice).

having a stable nuclear reactor that outputs 400 EU/t without any shuffling of cooling cells or heat vents is just nice.

by the way, in 1.4.7, the plutonium-thorium designs still work, meaning: the plutonium cell reacts to the 16 neutron impulses of 4 quad thorium cells. 420 EU/t made by just 2 plutonium cells and a bunch of thorium cells and a few copper ingots.

Oh nice setup, BTW is it very expensive? (Haven't gotten in Gregtech just yet, and those quad-thorium cells sound REALLY expensive).

the cooling system is expensive and eats tons of copper.

but the quad thorium cell is nice and cheap. it just takes 4 thorium cells (4 tin) and 5 copper ingots to make one.

but once the reactor is up and running, it produces a nice amount of energy. it's just working till the 1.5 (or 1.6) update, because then the plutonium cells don't interact with thorium cells anymore.

after the update, you can replace the plutonium cells with quad thorium cells, the output drops to 160 EU/t, and there are better thorium setups, but it would still work.

by the way, thorium will receive a 50% cut in the lifetime, whereas plutonium will get a change, that it acts like a double-uranium cell with twice the lifetime.

and for people who like breeding: no more uranium + 8 empty cells gives 8 near depleted cells recipe. so build up stocks of that stuff...
