This might sound weird .. but has anyone thought about designing/developing an FTB style Keyboard specifically for modded Minecraft? :p
I play on a private modded server with a good 60 mods or so and with all these mods needing their own controls etc it can get quite confusing. I'm pretty sure I've used every single key on my keyboard to perform some function within the mods and unfortunately I've doubled up on some keys.
I've no idea how much money something like this would cost to develop nor what kinda tech it would need etc. I'm just suggesting it as I'm sure it would prove useful to not just me but other people too.
Anyhoo
all the best

I usually deal with this by assigning some kind of "junk key". Something I generally never press, like the ^ button or the # button (based on your regional keyboard variant these may be different for you). And then I assign every single function I know I will not be using to that hotkey. For example, Railcraft locomotive controls? Two hotkeys I won't be using, off they go to the junk key. That way I can generally free up 5-6 keys for stuff I actually want to use.

And if I later do happen to build a Railcraft locomotive? Well, I can still remap the function to a different key then. I don't need to have it mapped from the very start of the map if I know it'll be ages until I get there.

for me it's F12. any kind of hotkey I never used or am planning on using get dumped on F12, a key I almost never touch

There is a modest improvement in the vanilla keybinding screen but it fails for really long function names so for the locomotive controls they look something like railcraft loco------- something hidden behind the next tab.

There have been a lot of utility mods like WAILA recently. Maybe it would be useful to have mod that makes keybinding easier. Perhaps it could hook somehow into other mods which have keybindings listed in seperate menus like Rei's minimap or inventory tweaks. Maybe it could also have the option to save your keybindings externally so that you could restore them in other games.

I just ran into this problem and popped on here to see if there was a topic on this. I decided to try out Resonant Rise until there is a 1.6 pack on FTB and I was floored by the amount of keys listed in controls. I tried changing the UI size hoping to be able to read the names, but it only fit more keys vertically and not the spacing between the buttons so everything is still blocked.
  • My go-to junk key is NumPad9 as I use my F keys for recording and streaming.
  • Like someone mentioned earlier, locomotive keys are the first to get junked for me.
  • I believe there's 2 IC2 keys that have never done anything and I doubt they have any use in 1.6.
  • I'm also considering getting rid of a lot DartCraft keys since those types of mods are not something I find fun. I'll definitely keep the clipboard though.
  • Factorization keys can probably go.
  • I've never played with ArsMagica, Mekanism or Waila so I'll leave all those until I figure out what they do.
