Not able to craft certain things

I cannot make blocks (lapis luzili and iron). I put 9 of them down, and the item wont show up to craft.
I also just tried to make a mixed metal ingot, same problem. I place the things down, and nothing shows up to make.
The weird thing is that the other people on my server do not have this problem.
Any ideas what the problem is?

You're probably playing on a Mindcrack server, which means you need machines to do those jobs. Blocks are typically made in a compressor. Mixed metal ingots are made in a rolling machine.

oh my goodness you're a lifesaver. I played on tekkit before, didn't realize you needed the machines to do those things now.

No problem. If you're not sure how to do something, NEI is your best bet to figure out how. For instance, if you click on Iron Block, you'll see a recipe, then arrows at the top. Those arrows show you alternate ways to make the same thing (combining microblocks, a compressor, etc.). When you see arrows at the bottom, that means there is more than one way to make the item using that technique (mixed metal ingots can be made on the rolling machine with lots of different metals, producing different amounts).
