Node merging confusion

Whenever I merge 2 normal nodes, the larger one gets bigger, as expected, but the smaller one remains there. Is this what's supposed to happen? I was under the impression merging them should leave one larger node in most cases.

Whenever two nodes are merged, the smaller one should disappear entirely, while the larger ones gains aura proportional to the size of the smaller node it combined with.

I've never had two nodes merge and form anything other than one larger node.

The remaining smaller node is a glitchy node. It doesn't really exist, and relogging should reveal as much (because it disappears when you relog).
