Same here, also doesn't seem to load any mods for the retro version, and when i open the folder to specify mods it does not list any in any file.

This is usualy caused by a firewall, anti virus program or by the filepath of the launcher containing special characters (including space).
Try temporarily disabling your firewall and anti virus, then delete the folder "C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\ftblauncher".
Now download the launcher again from the FTB site, create a new folder somewhere you'r sure it will have a filepath containing nothing but english letters and numbers (for example c:\FTB\). Now move the launcher to that folder and launch it from there. Hopefully that helps.

Well, it does rule out a lot of things, but it doesn't give any real hints of what the problem actually is.
Next step would be the forge mod loader log located in C:/FTB/FTBBETAA/minecraft/
Use pastebin or the code tag when posting large logs. :)
Code:
[code]Log goes here[ /code](remove space)

There is no forge mod loader log. The launcher took me straight to vanilla minecraft. No mods were loaded, including forge.

Ah, it's one of those days. It might be that they've taken down the files due to the bugged update, will try to dig up some links to see if that's the case.
Also, what Ash said

Windows 7 64 bit, My java should be 7u9. I appear to have basically the same problem except that I don't crash.

Everyone make sure if you're running windows that you have Java 7, update 9. That the bit types match and that you aren't being blocked by any antivirus' during updates/launches
