For 1.7.10, TE added a tiered upgrade system. IIRC, some machines include that and the redstone upgrades when crafted, and some don't. You should be able to craft the upgrade and add it in 1 of the 3-6 slots on the right of the GUI.

What upgrade would allow me to configure the sides of the machine?

Not sure about actual name, but type in "augment" in NEI, hold shift until you see the one that says "configurable sides"

I think it looks like a pneumatic servo
