Hi, I am wanting to find out if FTB is right for me. I am wanting to start a server so me, my wife (most of the time just us 2 but sometime others) 3 kids and a few friends can play together. And I am looking for a easy and good way to get into learning to install mods such. Because I want to play where I start out like you do in MC vanilla, but then work my way to City with everything going on, so basically Stone age to tech age type thing. But dont get me wrong having magic would be bad thing either. So is FTB something I should be looking at?

Also I am wanting some mods like, smart move and timber, road, etc in the game be it on the server or on my system. ALso want to use Sphax 256 if I can.

I have a 4770k at 4.6ghz 16g ram and a 260gtx(this will be changed soon) on Win7.

Timber can be replaced with treecapitator, I believe Timber is a Bukkit plugin and it wouldn't be fun to try to get FTB to work with Bukkit.

Your computer should be fine.

Sphax x256 might lower your FPS to something unacceptable, like 20 or 30, but if it's not ok then you can just downgrade to Sphax x128.

Smart moving is easy to install, it shouldn't conflict with any mods.

I suggest you start out with the FTB launcher. The FTB launcher comes with modpacks pre-installed and ready for use on servers, and it's easy to add or remove mods. If you look in the download instructions of a mod, it'll tell you how to install it. If it has Bukkit somewhere in the install instructions, you should probably avoid it if you want an easy to setup modpack. If it says it's a jar mod, put it in the jar mods folder on the FTB launcher. If it says it goes into the mods folder, have FTB put it in the mods folder. If it's a coremod, have FTB put it in the coremods folder. Quite simple, until you start adding mods that change the game in a major way (bukkit dependant mods, mods that require modifications to the .minecraft, etc.)

EDIT: Also, if you want to have up to 6 people on your server at once, you should be concerned about the server itself. If your PC can't handle running the server (which I doubt) then you should look into some of the creeper host servers. Of course, they might be a bit overkill for a non-dedicated server, so you might not have to use them.

I was thinking about running a server at vortexservers.com but not sure yet. main reason is that if anything happens here then they could play, if my computer is down still could play on another and play with others. they have to keep the info for my server etc. I dont.
but you think my computer will handle the server if I chose to run it on my PC?
Also I can only find Smart move of the 1.5.? for minecraft will that be fine on the FTBU?

Also can i get Optifine Ulta to run with FTB U? or do I need a lower one?

I have no idea what any of the information you posted means, but it's better than mine and I can run a good-decent server. So it's probably good.
On the Smart Moving Minecraft forum page, scroll down to about halfway and you should see previous versions for 1.4.7.

And no, a mod will never work on a version of Minecraft it isn't made for.

DO I need a modloader, or does FTB come with one already?

Smartmoving considers modloader and forge the same. You need the modloader version, if you look at the name it actually says it's for forge as well.

Put it in the mods folder. You can also put it in the jar, if you want to, but it's a hassle to update since you have to delete the entire jar.

FTB comes with forge pre-installed, you shouldn't need modloader for any the mods you want.

Just so you are aware FTB works perfectly fine with MCPC+ and therefore most if not all bukkit plugins work fine. You may find the odd thing wrong but MCPC+is constantly evolving and is a lot more stable now than it was 3 months ago and will continue to get better. Just thought it worth letting people know as it seems to be a common misconception that FTB + Bukkit is impossible.

OK going to chime in here...i have a older setup
CPU- AMD X4 965 Black Edition (3.9ghz)
RAM- 16gb DDR3 (1600)
GPU- 250 gts
===============================
Mine is having no issues pulling minecraft along, The only thing needed for this game in my book is RAM...and lots of it...it is JAVA after all.
I host my own server (MCPC+) for me and my brother and 3 of his friends and it has no problems doing it even with me online, But you must allocate your RAM, for me i have 5GB going to the Server and 5GB going to the game(i know i don't need 5GB for the game but why not lol), that leaves the rest to the host machine (WIN,MAC,Linux) that's up to you there.
