and giving me a heart attack. Sorry, I'm a Mac and Unix person. He's running FTB on a PC so I'm finding this even more stressful to deal with - I keep typing LS instead of DIR for example :)

This evening he logged in and was prompted to update New World (he loves Traincraft) to 0.0.5. FTB Launcher itself seemed to try to update itself too. This is on a Windows 8.0 Lenovo Y510P. I think Java is showing as 1.7 ?

Now it just crashes when ever we try to launch it - and worst thing is that the Launcher itself dies so I can't capture the actual log file to post here. You know where it normally says - copy to pastebin - that dies every time. I have no idea what to do. Are his existing New World worlds hosed?

Please help. I'm having a minor panic attack trying to deal with bleep bleep bleep machine.

Cheers,
Wanton

[20:40:01] [INFO] LaunchFrame.main:199: Launcher Install Dir: C:\Users\Elliot\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\IE\M03IGTLP
Can you try uninstalling the FTB Launcher and instead install it to a directory on your desktop as described in the troubleshooting guide? Go ahead and try following the entire thing to see if that helps solve this problem.

Ok, I've no idea how to backup/restore on a PC? Can I use tar? I sort of understand what that guide is saying, and if it was on my Mac it'd be fine, but I'm not quite sure where anything is on this PC. Will he be able to play his game world again?

Backup/Restore for Minecraft on a PC is very simple and requires no extra software. Simply copy the files elsewhere (that's your back-up); re-download and run the client and modpack. Then, if all that works? You can copy the old files back into the new directory. If the problem returns after you put the old files back then you know the old files aren't compatible with the new version on the mod, which is the point that I'm up to atm. T_T

Thank thank thank you all!! The instructions worked! I think I may have even restored his world - although there do appear to be some conflicts between 0.0.4 and 0.0.5
