Hello,
I'm thinking about starting up a server this summer. I would like some advice on how to start one, how to maintain it, and things along those lines. Any help, advice and tips would be welcomed. Also I haven't decided which mod pack to use, so advice on which to use would be nice too.

Pick a budget and maximum amount of players first. Location and some indication of your technical skills would be good as well.

However just to be clear anyone can make a server. :) Took 6 months to find the host that works for me but hey they are well worth every penny and more affordable than some idiots that lie about their support.

Its almost always cheaper to colocate or rent a dedicated server when doing medium-large servers but it requires quite a lot of technical skill and free time. You can usually do smaller servers on a VPS, but a GSP is trash, never use one.

Yea.. game server providers are hardly worth it but finally I found one that I have a very positive review that is like a novel lol. That's how good their support, care, and dedication to their customers. :)

If it's just for you and a couple of friends, if you have a decent internet connection, and a half-decent computer, shouldn't be too hard to run it on your own yourself.

The http://feed-the-beast.com/servers/downloads has the modpacks and files you need.
As for which pack to choose, FTB Unhinged is fairly difficult and has a lot of technical mods. FTB Unleashed is technical to an extent, a fair bit easier than Unhinged and has some magical mods implemented as well. You choose what you prefer. I personally I have no idea about what Direwolf20 gives.

I'd recommend looking into this http://forum.feed-the-beast.com/threads/jvm-arguments-for-modded-minecraft-updated-11-11-13.28994/ eventually, should help with some performance related matters if you are worried.

*Big note here: More RAM does not equal faster, that kind of logic doesn't work here.

I also recommend finding a mod to help in backing up files for the server. Personally I use a mod called Server-Tools. Backups are absolutely essential to maintaining your server. As with any server and especially heavily modded Minecraft you probably will experience technical difficulties eventually.

I am also new to being a server admin. Im currently running FTB Yogcraft on a vps through MCPROHosting. The cost isnt bad, the support so far has been spot on with any questions or problems i have had. Though there is much to learn as i dont know what plugins i can use and anything else i may need.

Just so you know mcprohosting only offers shared hosting and not VPS. But I have heard they are pretty good, their host is PheonixNAP.

Thank you all for the information and I will try to make good use of it. I am going to use FTB Ultimate but i have not figured out which server place to use, also i think there will be between 3 and 10 people using the server.
