While I don't disagree with you malicious, I find that Monster is "too much" for new players. Again, IMO LOL
You are correct tho' Monster is.. well.. a monster of a pack, and a tonne of fun to play. But for newbies, who don't want to spend more time on a wiki than playing, maybe a smaller, lighter pack will do.

The idea behind the Monster pack (IMO, correct me if wrong) is that it allows anyone to set up their own modpack.

Don't forget, in the FTB launcher, you can edit each modpack and remove any mod that you don't like or don't need or just don't understand and don't want to deal with.

So a person could use Monster pack, but remove all mods except for a few - such as the ones that MaliciousBloke recommended and as zemerick said.

My suggestion is for the OP to play Monster, but before starting click the "Edit Mod Pack" button and remove all the mods except the basic ones - Thermal Expansion 3, Applied Energistics, Tinkers Construct and Buildcraft, for example.

Once you get a feel for using those few mods (the essential mods IMO), then restart a new world but don't edit the modpack this time. Now you know the essential mods, you can get a base up and running, and then you can begin to experiment with the other mods in the modpack, like Thaumcraft and all the other great stuff.

Thanks all for the replies, i have been trying crash landing and agarian skies. I like these becuase of the quest and that it helps teach me what to do next and keep me on a straight foward path. I dislike them because i have to maintain food and only have a few lives. Is there any modpacks with a questline where its easier to stay on the quest and not worry about food so much?
Such as Running Red *hint hint* @Gideonseymour[DOUBLEPOST=1408286029][/DOUBLEPOST]

Welcome to FTB! I remember my first (and only trip) to ftb. I was playing on a vanilla server and the owner decided to make a ftb ultimate server. Yea that long ago ^-^ I couldn't believe how awesome it was compared to vanilla MC. Not to cut vanilla short or anything since I wouldn't be here if not for it. I didn't know that MC was so many different things, and stick with FTB because its made off the vanilla game. The only obvious difference is FTB has so many mods and modpacks. The people who created FTB also created all the mods within it. Who were those other people I rather not mention? Its not important, I digress.

Anyway I hope you have a blast with all FTB has to offer. I'm playing the Monster modpack and love it!

Well, the people who created FTB, while talented, can not claim credit for all the mods in FTB.. But they do have a good working relationship with a lot of the mod authors.
There are a few authors who don't play nice with others, but most are here as forum members.
