ok, so I am new to FTB and installing mods (this is the first one I have ever attempted). I downloaded FTB as an exe and ran the launcher after saving and have been able to create a world. My issue is that there is so much lag that it is almost impossible to play. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you and have a great day (or evening)! :D

Increase the amount of memory allocated for Java. You can do that via a setting in the FTB launcher.

Otherwise, what are your computer's specs? It might not be cut out for running modded Minecraft in the first place.

I think you should assign more RAM to your client, you should look for it in an Options tab>Advanced button on FTB launcher.

Also, try to update your graphic card drivers and Java Environment.

I thought I'd done something wrong when I installed FTB, but after joining this forum I found out that FTB is really resource hungry.

You could try one of the smaller mod packs, with fewer mods than say Unleashed or Unhinged. See how that goes.

It looks like a simple little game with its blocks and 16bit graphics, but Minecraft is actually pretty massive in resource demands. It has alot of balls in the air. Now throw on a crap load of mods to that. Like tossing in some chainsaws to the jugglers mix.

Couple of suggestions:

I just found this suggestion that drastically helped: My computer has a nvidia geforce videocard installed but I found out that it was'nt being used when playing minecraft. For some reason it was defaulting to the integrated motherboard card. When I right clicked on the FTB launcher exe it gave me a choice to run with my dedicated graphic card ..... I could do this at run time or actually go in and change the default permenantly. It brought my fps from 20 to around 50. Not sure if this option is available on different brands of video cards.

Optifine is a mixed bag but it has helped me after adding it. In video options I change the graphics from fancy to fast and then set the rendering distance to short +32. Also because I have a multicore i7 I was able to take advantage of that with some of the settings.

Not sure if you are running a texture pack but I was trying to run 128bit Sphax and it killed my machine. I switched to the 64bit and that helped a lot... of course if I was just running default textures it wouldn't be an issue but I just can't stand the default textures.

Good luck

this is a modded minecraft with as many as 102 mods in use at a time it is way more cpu intense than vanilla (unmodded minecraft) try turning on normal view fast graphs and use advance gi and in advance settings add 3 gb to ftb with the silder if you have it

A few options.

- In the launcher you may set aside more RAM for FTB. This is assuming you are running Java 64 bit. 32 bit is limited to 1 GB.

- Installing Optifine may help. In my case it made things worse. It could've been the connected textures effect (where glass appears to be one solid piece, instead of individual blocks), but I am not too worried.

- In your video options, play around with all the options and see what helps. Setting your textures to fast, reducing particles, etc. should help. (i.e. Everything should be logical. Sacrificing quality for speed shouldn't be a difficult concept to grasp I hope.)

What I must say now though is that if you are experiencing a high amount of lag currently, having just started, you may run into larger problems regarding lag/performance issues. FTB, though seemingly low on the graphics scale, is actually quite intensive on you computer. Both CPU (processing) wise, GPU (graphics) wise and RAM (memory) wise. If your computer is a combination of (a) not a gaming computer and (b) more than three years old, you may have significant issues trying to run something like FTB.

I used to have this problem and it could be that your monitor is connected to your motherboard and not to your GPU.

For me, it's as simple as (all in video options):
Graphics: Fast
Render distance: Normal, short, or tiny as needed
Performance: Max FPS
Particles: Decreased or minimal as needed
