Hey guys, I'm new around here. I hope this is the right category for this thread.

So I've played MC and dabbled with FTB before, but I've never know much about it lol.
I'd like to create a server for myself and friends, and anyone else that would like to join (Probably no more than 30 users).

I'd like the server to feel like a world, sort of like roleplay, but maybe not that in-depth. I'm hoping for things like skills, universal currency, faction-like groups and towns.

I have a basic knowledge of Linux, and have a good internet connection and decent hardware to host a server on, I just need some guidance. :^)

So what do you guys recommend I install? Is there anything I can research to get a better understanding og plugins and such? (I understand bukkit doesn't exist anymore?) What pack should I use? What plugins can/should I use?

Thanks in advance for any advice, and I'm sorry if this is in the wrong category, please move it.

First off, welcome. Always good to see the community growing.

I was never a Bukkit user, but from what I understand, FTBUtils has taken the sprit of many popular plugins and moved them into a Forge friendly mod. It has player ranks, land claims, chunkloading, alliances, and more. If there are particular options you were looking for, let us know and we'll see if we can point you in the right direction. If all else fails, the Curse mod repository is quite substantial, so that's a great place to start looking.

Have you decided on what Minecraft version you want to run on your server? 1.7 is stable and has a ton of content, but 1.10+ is where the bulk of the community is playing (I think that's fair to say, not done any real polling), and all the newer mods and content are being released. This will help guide our suggestions, as some of the content available for 1.7 has either not yet updated or never will.

I was hoping for 1.10, mainly for the combat updates, future support, and the alex playermodel. Forge is basically a modloader/library type thing, yeah? And as for FTBUtils, that comes standard with just about every modpack, right?

I appreciate the warm welcome, and hope to learn much with you all soon!

As a 1.10 alternative for bukkit, you can try sponge. Be warned however that you will not get support for sponge servers on the ftb forums, because of certain bugs that might be specific to sponge. Sponge has a forge version, so you can run plugins and mods, if FTBUtils does not give you everything you need.
