New to FTB

I'd recommend watching youtube videos. DireWolf20 has made quite a few mod spotlights and in his singleplayer series he also explains quite well how stuff works.

I recommend starting out with enderIO it gives a good introduction to just about every system used in ftb packs. It has power gen and storage, liquid creation and transport, inventory management, machine upgrades, ore processing, and redstone alternative. Although its cables are the best in most situations so you kind of spoil yourself by starting with them.

EnderIO is a fantastic mod. Like @UberAffe said, it has a little bit of everything. Even Infinity vets use in on every play. Also take a look at Tinker's Construct, IMO, it is hands down the best mod ever made for MC.

Rather than directing the user to specific mods (which can be found in many packs FTB or otherwise) perhaps consider which actual FTB Modpacks would be particularly good introductions for a newcomer.

@mc.crab's suggestion is particularly good: watching Let Plays is an excellent place to start, and DireWolf20 just happens to have an eponymous pack in the launcher that you can play to simulate what you see.

IMO the Infinity is by far and above the best modpack on FTB. Also IMO, there is little reason to play something like Direwolf when Infinity has everything that Direwolf has and more.
