So I'm new to FTB as it says in the subject. Migrated over yesterday during the kerfuffle over Redpower and updates and general wandering. :) So far it looks great btw, I'm really liking it.

Anyhow I'm kinda waiting (patiently, let me add) for a 1.4.6 pack before I start on a whole new world "for real" but I've started a couple of test worlds just to look around, since I've never used Thaumcraft or Mystcraft before. My post-vanilla experience has been mostly with IC2.

So my first two worlds seem pretty amazing (or maybe it's just cos I'm new).

The first one, I spawn near a desert temple, with a village not far away. Also to the north, some magnificent redwood trees (first time I've seen those, so I'm still a little awed). Beehives around too. I don't know about mineral content since I love the area so much, I'm gonna save the map for the 1.4.6 pack. The seed for that one is:
5977373380489974709

So after I "parked" that world, I tried another one, and I spawn in a plains-y, savannah type of place, with *another* NPC village right next door. And another first experience: a gigantic greatwood tree. A little further to the east and north there seem to be even more huge greatwood/silverwood trees.
Seed is: 6195660115999697698

So am I getting lucky with these or am I just easily impressed cos I'm new? :)

My first start was a fir tundra. The planks are ugly and barely work with the mods, and the trees take a whole MC day to chop down. >.<

Thaumcraft content isn't directly generated from the seed. The greatwood trees, silverwood trees, the nodes, and probably the dungeons would be located in different locations each time. Of course the nodes spawn frequently enough that their changing location wouldn't matter very much, and their size is based on surrounding vegetation (mostly), so you'll get generally the same sizes and locations for the nodes. Of course whenever Minecraft generates a pyramid or witch hut, Thaumcraft always parks a very large node in and above them, respectively.

Like a ley line I assume?

I use the seed from "Ren and Stimpy" happyhappyjoyjoy and it seems to work well for minerals and NPC villages.

I've seen a few different iterations of ley lines that I'm not sure which you're actually comparing it to. The nodes aren't arranged in any way linearly and their positions are in fact pretty easy to shift around, relatively speaking. The witch huts and pyramids just act as concentrations of aura, presumably either gathered by the witches and the ones who built the pyramids, or what attracted them to the location in the first place.

The idea behind a ley line is this.

Its a form of spiritual energy not yet understood to this day. It is assumed that many of our ancestors could sense they lines of energy that wormed over the earth. They would build these immense structures over points where the lines crossed. Much like with Stonehenge is a major spiritual attraction. Many say a huge collection of energy resides at points of intersection within the network of ley lines on earth.
