I have recently got FTB and I have been looking to start out. I am not really good with most of the mechanics, mainly cause I do not know how to start, I have a map I am currently on and all I have been doing it gathering and gathering.

What I want to do is Get a generator room up and running qurreys, pretty much bending the land and what it keeps inside itself to my whim like some sort of mad scientist hell bent on minecraft world domination

Check out the wikis of the various mods for tutorials and direwolf20's new single player season if you want some guidance on getting started. A pulverizor is usually my first goal after exploring and getting settled in. You'll need an engine to supply power to it. get yourself an electric furnace too and some solar panels and a battery box to supply power. Then get yourself an extractor, some power tools, and a compressor. After that is a quarry and everything else :D

That's nice.

...

Do you actually have a question you'd like to ask? :D

Well, my question is, what do I do ,how do I get started?

I have a place already set up right next to an oil field. I've looked up the suggestions and I will do them since I can easily look up what the bits I need for them. But I would like a more in depth detail on what to do. I want to build a HUGE power generator that makes lots of power to fuel the things I want and craft the high end stuff.

Also how to I get those things to work? how do I used them? what do I use them for? How do I go past that?

That's the beauty of modded Minecraft: there's so much to learn and figure out. I love figuring stuff out, knowing how it works under the hood... as my signature might tip you off to. The tool I most frequently use to answer my questions is my test world. A superflat world, redstone ready preset, with NEI in cheat mode. Whenever I want to know how something works, I got there and build it as many times in as many different scenarios as possible.

For a complete newcomer without a general intuition as to how things tend to work in Minecraft, however, the various wikis are probably a more suitable starting point. ICountFrom0 has made an excellent collection of links to wikis both official and unofficial, as well as guides and tutorials. If you want to know how to properly use your oil well, for example, just hit up the link to the Buildcraft wiki and look for the appropriate section.

If you can't find the answer even after extended research, you can also try this Q&A thread.

To get you started with your dreams of a "huge power generator", look for a Railcraft steam boiler and industrial steam engines. Conveniently enough, they can also run on the Buildcraft fuel you can refine from oil wells...

If you are a new player, I'd probably advise just messing around of a bit to begin with, experiment with some of the power gen methods, and work out which you prefer.

Personally, I usually prefer renewable sources, as I have a tendency to leave an area running for a while, and I don't like it running out of things. You could be using oil/coal/etc. which are incredibly powerful (especially after processing, see coal coke and fuel), but need finding and extracting before you can do anything with them.

Similarly, with a lot of the mods, there is a large amount of crossover. Do you want a BC quarry, or would you prefer a turtle mining fleet (if you are willing to put in the time, those are stupid powerful), or would you want to go the TC3 route, and use the arcane bore?

When farming, there are also quite a few different options, you could go the standard forestry route, and make a multi-farm, or build a cart to lap around and harvest things, or perhaps the megalomanic in you would prefer an army of little minions fetching and carrying your loot around.

There are new worlds to explore, with new items and loot to be found. You could go to the Twilight Forest and steal from the hollow hills, or take on the Lich to harvest souls for your exp spawners.

When you are a new player, the world is open to you, and you can use different methods on each new land you visit, if you please.

Also, bees.

If you're get started, you might be interested in starting bee's. They can provide some good stuff for starting, like using beeswax for wax capsules, so you don't have to waste tin on cans (refractory wax for lava), or using beeswax for torches/candles, so you can save your coal. Here's a fairly basic starter guide that doesn't spoil too much.

when it comes to me, I like taking small steps, to a larger goal which is in itself a step to an even larger goal. When I first come into a world the first thing I do is look for a spot I can create a suitable house and what not from, taking advantage of the trees and cobble to build things to survive. I generally keep it at the peaceful setting, I only switch it off when I need a certain item from a certain mob.
I am a completionist, I enjoy filling out a check list of what I need to do.

Here is a step by step of the basic, that I do, as well as many other players do.

1. look for a land that suits my fancy either a high up mountain of a flat land. And if I can have a ready source of resources near.
2; build crafting table and basic stone forge
3. build house, nothing TO fancy just a place I can store items and set spawn. Set to building chests for organizational needs
4. go on mad dash for Iron
5. build garden and use cobble to build a larger storage area...mainly a large tower...and just make it bigger and bigger...cause I ALWAYS will get more cobble
6. head into the nether and get the supplies I need from their, and make a base there for future trips. Glow stone and soul sand and blaze rods and tears.

Now with FTB I have more things to do. I have already included the creation of a rubber tree farm, with the possibility of creating a a room where the advanced crafting near a building that is the power room.

in a sense I am wanting ot know waht resources I should be after first, and what first devices I should get into. I have heard bee hives, but how do I make that? WELL Exedra provided that answer so I will look there for my bee keeping questions. Once I have a good grasp on FTB I plan on working into and doing some advanced stuff on my own.

I have crafted an Alloy forge and created some brass and some bronze and created a carpenter thing....with the goal of doing something with bees...but it seems I have to power the damn thing...to tired to think on it right now

In feed the beast, there is a way you can type in a name of an object, and it shows you how its made, and you click on the parts to see how they are made. I wonder if there is a reverse of that?
Meaning
you time in a material and it shows you all that it can go into.
Example
If you type in Iron, an Iron ore block will be seen, click on that, and you will see an iron ingot, click on that and it will show ALL the stuff that uses iron ingots, so on and so fourth.
I feel that if such a thing was around I could really get into what I need to do.

Yes, while mousing over the object, hit the "u" key. it will show those recipes that the item is involved with.

Personally I go out, find a village, get all my basic set up, make charcoal, make a slag furance, then make a coke oven. Beyond that I am winging it.

So they can die from zombies chasing them down instead of the safety of their homes in the middle of the ocean? You monster!
