New packs with Macs

Okay I've noticed that Mac users seem to be having trouble running the newer packs.
Myself and two other Mac users for my server are having problems, we can't even get the Horizons pack to open to the title screen. However, I CAN get it to work on my PC.

I've seen people saying that Java 8 is needed, which I've just done (as well as the JDK, just because).
It's not working, and I don't see a fix for this anywhere.

Is there a way to play the newer FTB packs on Macs? Or am I and all the other Mac users screwed for now? Or am I just doing something wrong? (I've played lots of past packs from FTB on my mac without an issue)
 
UPDATE:
I got it to work on my mac by installing Java 8 JDK, and then forcing the FTB launcher to use the java path to version 8. FTB then says it doesn't support this, but I launched anyways, and the pack run...
While this worked, it was quite annoying to do (you have to find the correct path, right version number, copy everything properly into the java path in advanced options, and on top of all that you have to have a launcher version that doesn't automatically stop you from doing this...).
Is there an easier way for macs to play the newer packs? I really can't see everyone using a mac on my server being capable of doing this.
