Hi everyone,

New here and first post.

Ive always loved minecraft and i am able to run it ok on my new laptop, even though its usually only at about 30fps its bearable.

Thought i would give FTB a go and i am using the DIREWOLF pack as i heard that would be the least laggy but its only running at 5-15 fps! Never been higher than 20

With it being a new laptop i thought it could surely handle even FTB and run smoothly. Looking for any suggestions on how to make it better and run smoothly, or even tell me if its not good enough :( laptop details are below.

Laptop: HP Pavilion 15-n096ea
Processor: Intel Core i5-4200U Processor (1.6GHz, 3MB Cache)
Storage: 1TB HDD, 5400 rpm
RAM: 8GB DDR3L

Like i said, any suggestions on how i can get this to run smoothly will be greatly appreciated, THANKS! :)

That laptop probably has an integrated graphics card which is not the best for gaming. If you have not already make sure you have the 64bit version of Java and try using about 2-3GB in the launcher. You must also understand that the new 1.6.4 packs are a drain on system resources. Having an integrated graphics card is going to be your bottle-neck and a big one at that. Check how well your computer runs FTB Lite2.

Thanks for your reply lavarthan. Having gave FTB Lite2 a run, it does run better and more smoothly than Unleashed or Direwolf which i have tried, but i do have to have settings really low, like render distance, smooth light off, fast graphics etc.

Would of loved to have the full load of mods but i guess this will do for now :)

The CPU you have there is an ULV (Ultra Low voltage) processor, mainly designed for Ultrabooks, and since they run at less power, their performance will be decreased as well. If you had bought a laptop with a CPU without the 'U' suffix and a 'M' instead, your performance will increase noticeably, however one issue still remains; the graphics processing unit is integrated into the CPU, meaning its not 'its not on its own'. And therefore the graphics performance is not as good as it would have if it was a dedicated one.

Additionally, notice the "Energy Star" certificate on the laptop, the less power a device consumes, the less performance it'll be able to provide.

Have a great day ;)

Thanks 0n1yCB. I'm not that clever on the computer stuff so never sure what i should be looking for when buying a new PC haha but as suggested by lavarthan FTBLite2 is running ok, im usually getting about 30-40FPS with all settings low, occasionally drops to about 20 FPS but then picks up, guess i'll just have to manage with it :) Vanilla does run perfect though but theres only so many times you can play with the same stuff over and over :D
I have 8GB of RAM, how much of it should i allocate? I read that if you allocate too much it could cause it to be laggy.

You are correct. Do not allocate too much RAM, because the program will start using the swapfile, which is located on your hard drive, and as you probably know, the HDD is MUCH slower than the RAM (thus why RAM exists), and the program will get laggy.

In vanilla MC you really don't need to specifically tell how much the game should allocate, it usually doesn't even use 1GB.

In FTBLite2 I think 2 GB is more than enough.
