So, this has recently come to mind, after being forced to use TMI because NEI wasn't showing items due to a glitch with my build of IC2.

What's the difference between the two?

NEI was made... for what reason?
TMI was always compatible with forge.
TMI already did what NEI went out to do.
NEI does everything that TMI does, and vice versa.

Why are we using NEI? Why the interest in it?
I've looked at both mods, and currently I can only see that NEI allows you to make configurations for what items/blocks you want to see from certain mods and save those configurations.
TMI allows you to get random firework spawners, keep favorites, make custom fireworks and also make custom potions.

It used to lack some of the features that NEI has, but now it's caught on and it has all those features. Have we all just forgotten about TMI? Possibly for some reason that I don't know about?

I think it's because originally NEI had crafting and TMI didn't, and also (I might be wrong about this) NEI is by Chickenbones, so it would be a bit of a dick move to cut out his mod (when he's one of the members of the FTB team) just because another mod now does the same thing. It's like if suddenly another modder made an exact copy of Omnitools (that's a bad analogy though cus NEI was originally based off of TMI) and they cut out omnitools for it.

TMI came before NEI. (The history is invedit < TMI = NEI, the left being the oldest and the right being the newest)

Not really sure why chickenbones needed to make his own take on TMI when the FTB team could have just used TMI. I'm assuming it would be because of permission issues.

Like I said, NEI had the crafting recipes and IC2 support and stuff like that and all TMI did was give you items

Yeah, that was back when ChB hung around the RP thread oft, he maintained rp patches for TMI for quite some time, my memory is hazy at this point, but there was a rough patch with TMI and that's when he made NEI.

It's kinda like the modloader situation, forge peoples kinda wanted to cooperate with risu, but had certain demands which he didn't wanna meet(wanted to keep ML leightweight, I think the disagreement pertained to MP and custom packets? Don't remember), so they made their own loader.

Simple:

TMI-Marglyth

NEI-ChickenBones

ChickenBones will always add support for other mods and have more features if the mod autors need but Marglyth is out of the forge galaxy so, FTB prefers NEI.

TMI is the mod that updates the fastest, even for snapshots, but it doesn't have the recipes thing that shows like "3 copper and 1 tin does 4 brass in an alloy furnace" that NEI has.

Can I pop in with a vote for CraftGuide?

Honestly, if CraftGuide were to have the crafting question mark that NEI has, I'd use it nonstop hands down, to the point of removing NEI manually if necessary.

CraftGuide does one thing, and does it elegantly: It gives you recipes. Forestry and Railcraft even have built-in compatibility for their mod machine crafting. If it had the question mark to paint crafting squares and shift+click to auto-populate the crafting squares with recipes, it would be perfect.

FAR less resources required, no CoreMods required, easy to use and navigate... the only thing it doesn't have is Cheat Mode, which I only see as an advantage.

Chickenbones is a part f the FTB team ?
News to me... Have a feeling it will be news to Chickenbones too.

TMI's still a thing? I thought it died sometime around 1.0...the more ya know, no?

Nope, people use them in snapshots to try the new stuff, or people that don't want to use forge or just new people.

From what I know, TMI is more famous than NEI.

Than we do have completely different experiences. For me CraftGuide lags like hell while NEI performs ok (it could be better though).

And using CoreMod as a counter argument to use a mod is bad. Now if you would have said Jar mod i would agree but CoreMods exist to still have access to base files while maintaining compatibility with other mods.
