I think in mindcrack, starting off with Buildcraft energy would be the route to go. Easiest engines would be the Hobbyist Steam Engines from Railcraft. Machines to use that power would be Thermal Expansion machines.

For starting out, I would recommend looking at Direwolf20's let's play series. It's for the DW20 pack, but the early basics would be the same.

As suggested, make a pair of Hobbyist Steam Engines and a Crescent Hammer. Now you can swap different MJ-using machines into that steam powered setup, like a Pulverizer, Rolling Machine, and Powered Furnace.

For your early EU energy needs, your Generator can run a Compressor, Extractor, etc., but you'll want a renewable source of power so I recommend you build 8 windmills or 16 water mills, connected with insulated copper cables and batboxes (4 cables and a batbox in series, repeated to prevent loss and give you a nice stored power buffer).

Once you have some power stored in your series of batboxes you can build electric furnaces and other Industrialcraft machines.
