It seems that when I try to generate a mystcraft world i spawn into a pitch black world or a platform with nothing around me. Am i doing something incorrectly

It's called a void age ... random. If you're trying random books you get those a lot. Next world could be meteors, one after that might have decay, or random explosions ... you've got some serious fun ahead of you. :)

Funily enough, after exploring 12 ages, I've yet to find a pure void age (DW20 1.4.7). Have had one age that totally killed the server, and one that hurts the server due to redpower marble generation.
