Hey has anyone managed to unlock the Crystals rune for their Mystcraft notebook yet? I've crafted just over 50 random worlds, and unlocked almost everything as far as I can tell, but no crystals yet. I got Glowstone and Dense Ores even. The Crystals rune is kinda important since we're hoping to start some long-distance railcraft stuff using portals. Hoping that its working, but not sure how long I'll have to keep making useless worlds trying to unlock this one.

I am well over 100 worlds now and still haven't found them. I got void on world 3 and glowstone withing the first 10.

It is all random afaik. Just keep up the hunting. Make a flat single biome: mushroom island, and hunt mooshrooms for leather and make a flat single: plains for feathers. Even a small reed farm should supply you with more than enough books to find it eventually. I feed my old books into a recycler to get rid of them.

Sounds like its about a 1% chance then.

Regarding all these useless worlds, do they end up burdening the server at all? Does anyone know?

I did around 200 ages before getting the crystal; now after starting a new world.. I choose to spawn it directly from creative..

+1 to this. Spent ages in my first world doing the random world generation thing, then I remembered that I hate gambling ;)

I love the mystcraft mod but the random luck of getting various world types is frustrating. I personally would prefer a resource-heavy and/or research-based system. I hear the mod author is looking at revamping the writing aspect, so hopefully he is looking at this!

He should ask Azanor (Thaumcraft 1/2/3, as you probably know) his research system for thaumcraft 3 it's awesome.

It does burden the server. A lot.
Minecraft's dimension handling loads a certain chunk area around the spawn of every dimension. If you've got a hundred MystCraft worlds, that's on the order of several hundred loaded. I'd be willing to say 8100 chunks total.
So yeah, massive server burden.

Personally, I'd recommend creative mode-ing yourself a notebook (and a linkbook modifier, too! ^-^) so you don't have to go through that tedious world jumping (unless you forget to make a linkbook back...).

Ok that's a bit different than I would have expected, since everything I've seen so far points to chunks not being loaded unless a player is in the vicinity or there is a world anchor type block keeping the chunks loaded. In theory, wouldn't extra mystcraft worlds only be a burden on the server if someone is using them at the moment?

But if you're right, then one should ask whether its possible to remove these worlds you're no longer using, by deleting the appropriate folders for those worlds on the server.

I don't mind the link modifier being expensive, mostly because it keeps easy teleporting out of the early game. Once you have a link modifier, suddenly hopping around the world is very easy.

There is, but I don't know what it is. The french vanilla server I play on also has a custom modded server that runs Mystcraft as one of the mods and the rules page states that nobody except for the head admin is allowed to create any mystcraft worlds and any others will be deleted daily.

It is. I've tried it, and that is certainly possible.

I don't believe unused ages will stay loaded after a server restart. Once visited in between server restarts it will keep the age loaded until the next restart.
