Mulch not working for the Fermenter, any good alternatives?

I have a problem with Fermenters. Mulch isn't working for some reason, only seems to accept compost and fertilizer.

Farming apatite is too time consuming, any good ideas on automating the manufacturing of Compost?

Compost is wheat around a piece of dirt, right?

As far as I know, you can also make dirt from said wheat (through plant balls), so any kind of wheat farm could give you what you want. (Forestry, railscraft, MFR...)
