At the moment I have a modpack that's on 1.6.4, but I would love to get it more up to date to reap many benefits and additions that was brought to Minecraft in 1.7.

My biggest concern is that this modpack is part of a huge creative project where I am building a city in microblocks. Microblocks of blocks that are also from other mods too. Is it even possible to actually make a 1.7 modpack with same mods, same item ids (is there a quick way to do this?), and make it so I could open up that map without anything breaking?

Any info would be amazing as it's giving me a headache just thinking about it.

Thanks! :)

What it essentially comes down to is: it's not worth trying. Moving between major versions tends to break damn near everything, and even for the modders a lot of them had to do a lot of code rewriting between 1.6.4 and 1.7.x. If you wanted to do this, it'd almost certainly be faster to use creative to rebuild everything in a new version than it would be to try and make your world update to 1.7.x. Cruddy news I know, but that's probably partially why I don't get too attached to my worlds! Best of luck whatever you choose, though!

Hmm well the world is Creative anyway, that was the problem. This will take AGES to rebuild haha. Microblock builds means it's a lot of intricate work.

Case in point:

But that news is a shame. I guess I'm going to have to stick it out with 1.6.4 or perhaps take the plunge and just rebuild the lot which I am not happy about doing lol. Thanks for the reply anyway!

Say this much, it's certainly lovely work! Quite a nice modern aesthetic you have going there, and I certainly understand how much time goes into a good microblock build. Friend of mine is quite skilled with those, I never have the patience. If it were me, I'd say stick with 1.6.4 for now. 1.7 is an odd update at the moment, seems to be a fair bit of flux. Some modders seem more inclined to skip it entirely and go straight to 1.8, though I'm fairly happy mucking about with Botania so far.

Yeah I'm pretty conflicted. On one hand 1.7.x feels faster and more stable and adds some extra things I could really do with, but it's a lot of work plus 1.8 coming soon.

I've been trying to get the semi transparent blue texture you see I've used for the windows onto an actual glass block (I'm currently using a cloud block that I tweaked the texture colour of to be more blue), but it seems 1.6.4 doesn't allow semi transparency in glass. I transfer the texture over and it just goes opaque. It's almost becoming a deal breaker as I want to add a few different shades and colours of this style of glass and it looks like I need 1.7 to do that!

1.8 may be coming out soon but I do wonder how long everything I need takes to update as well.

You reckon 1.7 to 1.8 would have the same issues with mods breaking?

I haven't heard too much about what makes 1.8 so special, so I couldn't say for sure. On a personal level, I find that trying to update a pack between any major version iteration pretty much always breaks it, so I've stopped even trying to make it go. It's just far too much work even trying to make a pack stable in the first place, much less with all of the old 1.6 ID conflict resolution necessary. While that's no longer an issue with 1.7 and up, Mojang never seems to code in a particularly modder-friendly way. Seems like every other major update everyone needs to rewrite their code again, but as I'm not a coder I can't speak too much for their point of view.

1.7 is not more stable. Its pretty horrible for the most part.
This, pretty much. For most folks, 1.7 results in a flat FPS loss overall. My computer's old enough that I never get a solid 60 FPS anyway so I don't really notice it, but most other people with their bleeding edge computers do, haha.

This. I get 280 FPS on 1.6 on my dedicated card, 30 on my integrated. On 1.7, I crash when I join a world on integrated, and get 50 FPS on my dedicated. And this is a PC that handles anything else I throw at it with no issues. 1.7 is absolutely horrible for performance.

You know, one of these days I need to get around to finally building Evermore... but I just don't have the time for that kind of mega-build.

As far as updating, I'm 99% sure it won't work, if for no other reason than blocks are being referenced differently now, so you'll have massive corruption.

Interesting! I felt it was smoother for me on 1.7 and higher FPS too. Shaders is another thing that works a lot better in 1.7 too so I saw that as a plus.

I think then I'll be sticking it out with 1.6.4. Maybe I should learn how to build a mod that I can add new blocks in with to counter it.

Makes me think of my usual world name... Terranigma. 'course, you may not be referencing the Evermore I'm thinking of! Quite likely not, really. But eh, nice bit of nostalgia either way!

From what I've heard, it's projected that it'll be even worse in that regard and that the "stall period" is going to be pretty lengthy. A ton of refactoring goes into 1.8 last I checked in on that, and the handling of a bunch of stuff is once again changed and has to be accounted for.

So, I wouldn't be holding my breath. Use what has what you want to play with right now.

Thanks for all the responses everyone! I guess that confirms it then. In with 1.6.4 for the long haul! :)

There was a game for the Super Nintendo called Secret of Evermore. It was a campy game that didn't take itself seriously and considered the fourth wall to be more of a rotating door than anything else. It used the same basic engine as Secret of Mana, with the menu wheels and all, although it had an interesting item-based magic system. In general, there were several distinct regions that each one were taken from different time periods. One was prehistoric, one was roman-esque, one was midevil... then there was the space station, which is probably best handled as a different dimension.

Well whadya know, it -is- the same Evermore I was thinking of. While not the best game ever, there are certainly aspects to it that I enjoyed. I can't imagine doing a world build for it though, you'd need a whole team and a significant amount of time to manage the likes of that beast. Also, you'd need some spears. Just isn't the same without spears (and weird magic/alchemy). Wouldn't want to forget a useful canine companion either!
