Biofuel, obviously, but it requires quite a lot more than just saplings.

Making wood and putting that into a sawmill comes after that, because you can then bun the wood and the charcoal that you get from doing that.
But I guess you already have too much saplings because you farm trees.

What is the best or most eficient way to produce minecraft joule from saplings

From forestry: Saplings & Fertilizer are placed in Fermenters to yield biomass which can be used in Biogas engines. It's possible to take Biomass into a Still to yield Biofuel to be used in combustion engines but it's less efficient than refining oil into fuel to be used in combustion engines.

In Forestry 1.0 you could have made a Tree/Peat farm setup that would have mostly self sufficient.

In Forestry 2.0, due to some weird mechanics (possible bug) the default tree farm (managed) produces even more saplings than the Foresty 1.0 tree farms farms have been fixed to yield slightly better than forestry 1.0 at 4x4x4 med. large multifarm using max farmland. It's only slightly better, but no longer self sufficient. However, you can setup BC pipes (w/ gates) to pump specific resources into the farm when necessary.

The default answer right now is probably fermenters to biomass to biofuel to steam. Steam is pretty darn efficient once you get it heated fully. Don't try it without a significant reserve of fuel though.

They do produce a massive amount to saplings, and a fair few apples.
Saplings in the fermenter and apples in the squeezer, with the waste mulch from the squeezer into the fermenter seems to be a good set up at the minute.

Except that I've found that the apple production doesn't seem to be fast enough when try to utilize apple juice instead of water for the fermenter. The sapling production is enough in the (bugged?) multifarm default that it can feed into 2 fermenters decently.

The mulch can be used to make more humus for the multifarm via a carpenter.

Multifarms have been fixed so no more duplication issues. Harvest rate is just slightly better than the old forestry 1.0 farms (at size Med. Large = 4x4x4, max layout for farmland). Unfortunately this does not allow my two fermenters to run at full capacity if using water. Apple juice works pretty well but without the need for humus, I'm shifting mulch use for Bog Earth (peat farm).

Testing SC2 tree farms to see how good sapling production when compared to multifarms 2.0

Mulch is faster if made with a moistener and wheat and a steve's cart farm should run faster for trees if you use the hydrator and fertiliser, slap a solar panel on that bad boy with a back up coal engine it's fairly cheap to run then.

I've also found, one fermenter can feed 3 stills at once to achieve faster fuel production.
