Hey guys

Ok so I know lots of people hate using the generic lava for power but I just started a new world and I need a quick fix until I have my boiler up and running !!

So what I am asking is what is better ? Lava straight into magmatic engines or lave into generators and then into mid way upgraded engines ?

Converting anything into EU and then using that EU in engines to make MJ is never efficient. So just pump them into magmatic engines directly.

if you`re talking about forestry`s electric engines, they need an efficiency upgrade, in order to have standard 2.5:1 conversion ratio, instead of 3:1

I know, but that still doesn't make them efficient.

"When the engine is producing 4 MJ/t, one lava cell or bucket will produce 18,000 MJ, a Thermal Generator, will make 30,000 EU per bucket."

2.5:1 conversion ratio is 12,000 MJ from 30,000 EU - worse it's 10,000 MJ with 3:1

by converting lava from EU to MJ when you only want MJ you lose 1/3 (12/18) of all the energy produced. If you don't bother to upgrade, then you lose 8/18 or 4/9ths of all the power produced.

even worse, if you're using geothermal gens instead of thermal gens, your EU out is an abysmal 20,000 which would convert to 8,000 MJ which is under half of what you would get by just using a magmatic engine.

hehe... me neither, it seems lazy to be honest

though what do I know about being lazy - i'm using the MFR bioreactor to make easy fast biofuel lol

the fact is i dont use lava because its actually to much hassle, for my taste, to move pump once in a while. i prefer automated self sustained powersources like farms and boilers.

Factorization's solar boilers and a steam/hobbyist engine.

Silver is relatively useless anyways, and mirrors and the solar boiler are quite cheap.

Current, 1.5.2 magmatics produce 20k MJ per bucket. So, it's even more difficult to break even on lava. In fact, netherrack is the only viable source of lava power and only piped directly into magmatic engines.

Blaze Rods also produce lava in Ultimate 0.7, one Rod in the Magma Crucible returns 250 mB for only 200 MJ. Not sure if it got enabled by mistake, but this would be the cheapest way to replace the Nether lava early on. (A T5 spawner with an MFR Grinder should also produce enough mob essence to support other MFR mob farms. ... Or simply use a couple melee turtles.)

Second choice would be Demonic/Fiendish Bees, one Alviery should be enough unless it got really nerfed a lot. I was using three in 1.4.7, this not only supported 32 Magmatic Engines, but was also feeding a number of GregTech centrifuges to get copper, tin and electrum. Plus a constant flow of Ash for fertilizers and plenty Glowstone.

Everyone is talking about magma crucibles but what about lava fabricators ? Don't they just produce lava from MJ ? If so how efficient at they compared to a magma crucible with netherrack in it ? And lastly power converters ? Are they better than magmatic engines or do you even get ones that convert lava ?

P.S. As I said in the first post this lava set up is only temporary as I already have my mfr tree farm feeding to my boiler! But this thread will help other beginners as well as I do need a little extra MJ so lava sounds good !

lava fabricator takes 20,000 MJ in order to make 1 bucket of lava.

to be honest, the best way to get lava power is to pump it out of the nether. The second best way is to melt netherrack in a crucible. Everything else is too expensive.

also, power converters are always lossy - they are meant for convenience, but a dedicated system to produce EU or MJ or whatever will always be more efficient.

People throw around level 5 soul shards a lot, but 1.5.2 Soul Shards require End Stone to make. That's pretty far into the game to just start replacing netherrack.

The End is actually the perfect place to go as soon as you got your first 10-12 ender pearls. ... Before spending them on anything else. :)

Take a linking book to your home, an unlinked book, book stand, ladders and some cobblestone with you. In the End, search for a fairly open area and dig down a couple blocks. Make a small room under ground to put the linking book, that can take you back home. (Of course, link another book to this room to be able to travel back to this place.)
Then ladders to the surface and a 3x3 platform above the exit, 2 blocks above the ground. Maybe another ring of half slabs 3 blocks above the ground, if you want to get fancy. As long as you are under the platform, you are safe and can easily pull Endermen to your position by simply looking at them. What you've got now is not only a great outpost for the time, when you start mining the asteroid or actually want to kill the dragon. You also got a pretty efficient "poor man's" xp farm and fast and unlimited supply of ender pearls.

I've never tried that so early. I think I'll go do that on my new-ish world.
