A friend of mine that I play FTB with is running into a problem with his frame rate, and we've looked all over the internet for a solution and haven't found one yet, so I figured I'd try here.

Essentially, whenever he tries to open or close his inventory, or any sort of GUI (furnaces, crafting bench, etc.), his FPS drops to 0. The spike lasts a few seconds after opening the inventory, and subsides until closing the inventory, where it freezes up again for a few more seconds. Our server recently switched to Monster from Unleashed, and none of these problems were there before, and they don't seem to appear in any other mod pack. They occur in both single player and multiplayer. It's unlikely related to the power of his PC since he has a 3.2 quad core, 8GB of RAM with 3 dedicated to FTB, and a decent video card. Another friend from the server runs it just fine on a laptop with 2GB of RAM (1 dedicated) and a 2.4 processor.

Things we've already tried:
  • Disabling NEI - This was the first solution we went for, since the spikes appear only on the inventory screen and other GUIs. Disabled it in game with the hotkey, when that didn't work, removed the mod from the pack. No luck.
  • Testing multiple versions of Java - we know the newest version of java has some Minecraft problems, so he tried different versions, modifying paths where needed. No luck.
  • Tried -XX:MaxPermSize=128M in additional java parameters - No idea what that actually does but another forum post with similar issues claimed it worked. It didn't in this case.
That's about it.
Been looking around for a few days for a solution, and things that worked for others don't seem to be working for us. If anyone knows what might be going on here, any advice would be appreciated. Any additional system information available upon request.
