Bug Monster > GasCraft > Can't find shale

Monster has flat bedrock, and I've been digging for ages trying to find some Shale to Frack. I went in creative and dug all over and with the mining laser and such and am finding nothing. No shale. What is going on? I haven't encountered natural gas pockets, either.

Back in the days I was still playing monster (1.1.1 and 1.1.2) I found a few, but they are very rare, maybe one in a 200 block radius or so

Right on que to make me look impatient and dumb, my room mate locates some shale, haha. He freaked out when he showed me and built a fortress around it.
