So apparently when I attempt to mine ores or attack different mobs than Zombie Pigmen, they become aggressive an attack me... Is this a config option or a bug?

The reason I put it here instead of Support as this isn't a Game breaking bug nor does it cause any performance problems.

The "attack upon mining ore" is intended. If you mine something(might not cover all the nether ores) if there are any nearby pigmen they will all turn hostile to you for "stealing" their valuables. In earlier versions you could circumvent this by using the IC2 Mining Laser to mine the ore as they wouldn't notice it then(due to the mining mechanics I guess), but I haven't tested it for 1.6. You will also notice that most ores will have a bad habit of being explosive when you try to mine them. :(

The fact that they turn hostile when you fight other mobs I don't know about. I have heard about ghast fireballs etc hitting the pigmen would turn them hostile to you.

Has anyone been able to see if these negative effects can be circumvented using turtles or block breakers?

If your mining nether ores or quartzes it is normal for them to attack due to the way nether ores is setup in the pack. If you do not like it you can change it in the config file for nether ores.

Now as for attacking you for harming mobs, that is a default minecraft feature as they treat their zombie brothers the same as other pigmen.

Also be aware that if a ghast or nitro creeper blows up any nether ores the pigmen will not be pleased and will take out their rage on any near by players. Which I think may also apply to mining lasers and anything else that breaks the blocks now but I have yet to test it.

Thing is, I'm fine with 'em trying to kill me constantly(hey, free gold!), but the exploding ores was REALLY grating.

you could circumvent that in the old packs by using a TiCo hammer to mine the ores by putting a block of cobble next to it and hitting the cobble instead of the ore directly. I think that was on the buglist tho, so it's probably been solved.
nether ores do not explode when silk touched tho. at least in the older versions. this was a feature, and should still be so in new versions i think. I might install monster and do some tests later on. I just got back into minecraft after a nice break for a few month's.
do note, that pigmen aggression and explodiness is a nether ore mod only feature. you should still be able to safely mine vanilla nether quarts and any other ore added by other mods. only nether ore mod ores should cause aggression. but be careful with the TiCo hammer if they fixed the old bug, you could easily accidentally mine a nether ore with it due to it's AOE.

Speaking of exploding ore, guess what happens when you try to mine one of these:

I really dislike how Nether Ores treats Nether Quartz as an explosive ore by default. The rest of them make sense, since they're worth twice their overworld versions, but the quartz is used in a ton of stuff and is kind of vital for progress in some mods. Thankfully that can be changed in the config.
Also, I'm pretty sure that mining lasers, the excavation focus and anything that doesn't involve physically mining the ore still don't trigger angry pigs and explosions.

Heh... I didn't expect this thread to, explode, so quickly.
I regret nothing!

Which config control would that be? I might turn them both off for the sake of how crazy the nether is with the Firebats and stuff like that... Don't need everything else exploding.

Config->powercrystals->netherores->common.cfg

# If true, when NetherOres are mined, nearby pigmen become angry to the player.

# NetherOres have a chance to explode when mined if true.

Ah, thank you. I got the config changed, now I just got to reset my Nether to test it. Also:

I found this in the config for Nether Quartz

# If true, Nether Quartz ore will be a NetherOre and will follow the same rules as all other NetherOres.
B:OverrideNetherQuartz=true

I laugh? Not like I recognize what it is in this texture pack anyway.
Its Nether Quartz. Try and mine one that blows up it will start a chain reaction that will blow up the entire ball in 3-4 cycles.

you can fool the pigmen by using autosmelting tool of Tinkers construct ;)
