I just discovered that my keyboard has a feature that I was, until now, unaware of. If I hold down any of the vowel keys for about half a second, it pops up a little box on the screen with up to eight options for all the diacritical marks that can fit on that character, and then I can just press a number key to select one. Holding A gives any of these: à á â ä æ ã å ā
It also works with some of the consonants: ÿ ß ś š ł ž ź ż ç ć č ñ ń
And capitals, if I hold shift: Ę Ñ Ł Ü Æ
