Hi all,

I set up a custom 1.7.10 server for me and my son with lots of mobs and I notice that after a while there are practically no hostile mobs anywhere. I can partially solve this by doing peaceful and then normal again but that's only temporary.

I see on google that other people also sometimes have a problem of lack of mob spawning on servers but no real solution (besides peaceful/normal). Is there no good solution to this anywhere?

Thanks

Really strange bug. Seen it happen on a server years ago. Absolutely nothing would spawn, some times not even squids. It was very periodical and there were really no clear explanation.

I've experienced this on almost every server I ever tried to play on. It's partly why I rarely play on multiplayer servers and just play solo. When you can't get any slimes to spawn and can't get any slimeballs to make sticky pistons (yes, I know there are other options now for sticky pistons but in the past there wasn't), or when you can't find a single enderman to get any enderpearls... the game can just get too frustrating to deal with.

Cauldron can fix this due to the way it handles mob spawns.[DOUBLEPOST=1413662132][/DOUBLEPOST]Alternatively, you can set up a script/cron job to run /cofh killall every few hours.

Do you have mob adding mods installed? Something that generates a metric ton of silverfish or something of that nature?

Instead of peaceful, you should use the /cofh kill command to see *what* it is that you're killing. It should give you a better idea of which mobs are taking up the spawn cap.

Where else?
i use this to my advantage. mobs+ nametags= mobs that take up the spawn cap, and don't despawn :p never have to worry about mobs again.

I think in 1.7.x Mojang fixed it so that mobs holding items/named mobs don't contribute to spawn cap.

Do you have chunks that are constantly loaded? Mobs will spawn in loaded chunks. And seeing as spawn cap isn't X mobs a chunk, it's just X mobs, then X gets spread amongst all the loaded chunks.
So let's say you have 200 separately loaded chunks... that's 199 other chunks (excluding the one(s) you are in) that can have mobs spawning in them. And seeing as the mobs can spawn in caves throughout the day, there won't be many spawning at night

We're still very early in the world. We don't have chunk loaders yet and we're living close to spawn right now.

I tried /cofh kill earlier today and 170 hostile entities were killed (zombies, skeletons, taint stuff and so on). After that spawning seemed to be ok for a while. I'll check it further.
