Somewhere over the rainbow.
To resume the work of all mod makers for Minecraft is to make everything totally impossible to automate, cause everyone think that if you can do something automatically without too much effort, its automatically OP and its an exploit or something like that, I hate this way of thinking so much, I took off gregtech from my modpack because of the way GregoriusT thinks about this, I got nothing against him and his fans, but that's not the way I want to play Minecraft.

You can exploit the system a bit at the moment though. You can do what DW20 did in spawning regular slimes, then sending them on conveyor belts past some vet stations with slime embiggening syringes, then finally down to some grinders. This will generate more essence than used to spawn the initial slime, although is does cost lapis for the syringe. (This may get left as an option since it is not a closed loop.)

Blue slimes will never generate enough mob essence, as they only split to one smaller slime. Only the max size regular green slimes and magma slimes will generate more essence than they used. In the 1.5.2 version I am running, the exploit still works, but even then I have to generate lots and lots of slimes to get a worth-while positive loop. It doesn't create nearly the amount of essence it created under the 1.4.7 version of MFR. For the tiny bit of extra essence I create using the exact copy method with max slime size, It is not really worth the energy it takes to run it.

For the most part, I just leave my spawning area set up as a dark room and let the random spawns generate the mob essence I need. It works well enough for the ender pearls required.
Not true. I set my auto spawner to spawn copies of the huge blue spikes with 4 grinders (just to make sure the spawning doesn't get out of hand), And it was producing mob essence faster than I could use it. I stopped playing the world shortly after that, and had 500 buckets of the stuff.

Gregtech adds automation...

At least for MFR that just isn't true. You can easily automate the whole mob essence generation, and the mod even provides all the tools to do it. There are automatic farms (harvester, planter, fertilizer) to harvest wheat/carrots and other agrarian products. There are breeders to breed animals (and those animals provide the resource for the fertilizer). Small animals get pulled out of the herd by a chronotyper and when they are grown, get automatically slaughtered for mob essence (plus the usual drops). It is just a bit more engaging then dropping down one block to provide unlimited mob essence without even a running cost.

MFR is designed so all parts of the mod work together to provide you with almost all the materials you can get from plants/animals and mobs. So the MFR way is promoting automation, not making it impossible.

Yeah I love MFR, its a really nice mod and currently one of my favorites, but its not the easiest to provide everything automatically, most sides of each machines have to be used and that makes it harder for a cool design, the ones that were hard for me are the mob grinders, power from under, get the mob essence from the back, and still, another pipe from the top is needed, now if you want to control them with a redstone signal so they don't work when the spawner isn't active, where do you place the redstone wires, you have to place it on the side of the machine, not that easy if you want a cool lookin mob slaughtering building, yes levers work on the side of it, but levers are so low tech...

Strongly powering block next to the grinder works well for hiding redstone. Alternatively you can use iron gate controlled by pipe wire on one of the already connected lines.
