So Power Converters is turned off by default, and the server I'm on has no power converters. I really love using MJ for producing power, but I would like to be able to convert it to EU. In the past I just converted it directly, but now that I can't I'm looking for a new way to do this.
I was thinking MJ to magma crucible using an igneous extruder, then get the lava in geothermal generators, but I think you lose at least 3/4 of the energy, which is terrible.
Does anyone have a good method to try out?

If you're using the magma crucible for lava, netherack is the only reasonable material to use, it uses far less power than melting down cobble. If you were planning to use much EU power, it would be much more effective to set up a lava pump in the Nether to feed the geothermals, the crucible is only worth using if you rarely use the EU

If you are producing your MJ with steam boilers, you can instead produce EU with the steam. It's not really a MJ to EU conversion per se, but rather a different option to use your steam.

Railcraft's steam turbine will give you 200 EU/t for 320 units of steam per tick. The same 320 steam would be worth 64 MJ/t, so you're getting a conversion ratio of over 3:1. You won't find a better converter in all of FTB; even Power Converters isn't as good (though the PC thingies are cheaper to set up).

Downside being that it doesn't work with MJ produced from engines. You must run a boiler.

I believe AE added some kind of power converter, but I'm unsure if it works outside of AE networks. Probably not, but it might be worth trying.

Not a power converter, but power sharer for other AE networks.

There is a Lava Fabricator you can use from MFR. It accepts both MJ and EU, and is more efficient than the Magma crucible.
