Somewhere on the internet
I know I'm the same guy that made the balance rant thread, but my opinion has changed a bit.

I'll go around to threads and see the mods people are using, and I'll notice things like "X mod does stuff better than Y mod, so I only use X mod".

The honest truth is, does it really matter if x machine runs a bit better than y machine?

Me and a lot of my friends are more interested in playing the game for fun. Things like this include building force fields for the sake of having a force field and pranking each other, and others.

And if you're on a server and someone was able to get resources better because he focused on more efficient things, good for him! But this doesn't mean other mods are obsolete. They just add more fun game play mechanics and such.

Regardless, this doesn't mean the game shouldn't have ANY challenge to it, it definitely should. But that doesn't mean people don't need to use easy ways to do these things and use fun ways instead.

In my eyes, Factorization sucks. Compared to what I can do with a Grindstone, Powered furnace, some pipes, a hopper, and a clockwork engine, it's a piece of crap. But I love it and it looks cool and I have fun with it, so I use it.

I have a very twisted definition of 'fun'.

I enjoy myself more when I know that the effort I went through to acquire something was greater than, or equal to the value of whatever I tried to acquire. Obviously converting manual labor into a value that can be compared to whatever the hell you're making is entirely subjective. I never felt right about using Soul Shards. They were soooooooo easy, and entirely maintenance-free. I used them for a long time, but it never really sat well with me. So, instead, a week ago I switched to an MFR auto-spawner. I enjoy the experience much more, now.

When I was trying to make a witch soul shard I couldn't for the life of me find a witch hut. So I used transformation powder (found in a lich tower) on a skeletal druid, caught the resulting witch in a safari ball, put that in an MFR auto-spawner (fed mob essence from my Railcraft-based animal farm) and ground out the shard that way. Why use 1 mod when you can use 4?

Well some modders like to nerf their devices or making them underpowerred. My favorite example - Steam Turbines. I like the concept and design, but... it costs 259 steel. And i have to make a lot of them to power gregtech machines. 100 Eu/t might be impressive for IC machines, but not for GT. I just don't know, turbine seems to not worth it unless you like it like me. But that might destroy the fun you are talking about - who needs steam turbines when you have to mass-produce them like any other generators in the mod?

But I can agree with you - for example I don't want to use advanced or compact solars. They are effective, yes, but sometimes they feel like creative generator suggested by someone in IC2 forums or infinite battery from UE.

Basically, yes. Fun is a good thing. I just feel that under/overpowered things both kill it.
