What is the cheapest most resource efficient early power source. Renewable would be nice but I have limited resources right now and cat build to much.
Edit: What is also the easiest way to run machines

make a manual tree farm, collect the saplings and replant after you cut down the trees, then smelt the logs to create charcoal

For machines it depends if you are going the IC or BC route. IC I would just make a generator and burn charcoal in it and either use copper wire or attach the machines directly to the generator. For BC I would make a sterling engine for now (which can also take charcoal) and use stone pipes (or the thermal pipes which have no/little power loss).

I went for what Direwolf used in his videos. With thermal expansion. Made a pulverizer & Power furnace. And I could power them with 2 Hobbyist steam engines who can run on coal & water. Pretty easy. And it does it job for early stages :).

To fully power one pulverizer and powered furnace, you could expand to 4 hobbyist engines.

Although be aware that if you're not careful the hobbyist engines can explode. This happens if the engine runs dry, and you try to refill it while it's still hot. Easily avoidable, but still quite a nuisance. You may want to look into hooking up an Aqueous Accumulator, if you've already got gold and redstone for the hobbyist engines. (Although finding cacti for waterproofing is really quite annoying, and setting up an Apiary and a Centrifuge for beeswax requires quite a bit of bronze...)

I think there's a guide somewhere for MJ 'tech tiers'...

I personally tend to go the manual tree farm route, before scaffolds got nerfed, it was extremely effective, but now it's still a good source of early energy.
