Mindcrack: getting started guide request

Pick a modification, and start playing around with it. I usually start with IC2, although with the GregTech modifications to that, it will surely be a good bit expensive, so you may want to go with BuildCraft/Forestry/etc.

From there, look up the quick start guides/let's plays/video walkthroughs dealing with that modification/those modifications.

As you start to expand, start to branch out and look through NEI, or just research the other modifications.

If I could recommend a simple starting strategy, FIRST tackle the basic minecraft needs: Food, Shelter, Light, Tools, Armor. SECOND, Farm wood like crazy, and collect all the ores and objects you find while caving (Don't smelt ores unless you need them, until you get some machines running later). Also, be on the lookout for some rubber trees. THIRD, pick a starter-mod from that thread I linked and start experimenting! I should mention too that Thaumcraft might make a good starter-mod If you are more exploration and experimentation driven, while IC2 and TE are very structured and refined.

This last go around, I started with mindcrack 8. I wanted to play with bees, as I haven't done much along this line previously. I settled among 3 oil spawns in a meadows biome. I found a villager trading for melons, so I traded those right away. I stole some apiaries from a couple villages I found, and got started. I have gone spelunking and branch mining, but have so far only found 3 diamonds. one went to a beealyzer, another somewhere else important. can't remember. I can't get very far with rp2, as I need to make a diamond saw, so i went down the thaumcraft route, as you only need the aspects, and there are multiple sources for most items.

Since i have thaumcraft and melons, I have decided to run my base off of seed oil, as melons grow abundantly, a straw and wood golem will harvest everything nicely. (sengir nerfed milk in the biogas engine.) If I find more diamonds along the line, i will probably set up a refinery, but until then, it's melons for me. :)

p.s. I am using TE for ore processing and sand production as needed. I used the igneous extruder for making obsidian, as i have no easy way of harvesting it currently.

In the end it is all up to the mod you start out with. I would go with thermal expansion. My world I am on right now I went more towards Forestry and it backfired on me. My beginner set up was no where near enough to power all the arboretums. loggers, etc. If I was you I would get basic machines like a ore output increaser(Macerater/Pulverizer/etc). The next step should be a power room/plant. There are many different kinds of ways to go but Lava is the most noob friendly and effective.

Yep, just pick one and start. Have lots of fun and derps along the way. I do recommend thermal expansion for the starting machines (as recommended time and time again by others) along with the railcraft hobbyist steam engine if you don't have easy access to lava. Even if you do, the hobbyist engine takes less than 2 gold ingots, 1 iron, 1 redstone, cobblestone and wood, and can run for quite a while on coal and water. In railcraft, heat values are doubled for coal vs charcoal, and doubled again for coal coke, so you can get quite a bit of energy from just a few pieces of coal. It's one of the best early game engines.

I've never actually explored forestry; I did however get pretty far into IC2/Greg tech before my world deleted.
