hello

I have a quite simple questions: which settings do I need to change to accomplish this little task.

situation: I found a natura redwood-tree, and decided to build a base inside (each time I play, I try to think different). the lower part of the tree is spacious enough to house a small treefarm, which I'd like to do with minefactory reloaded (not sure if it should be fully automatic - with planter - or semi-automatic - without planter). but the farming process should be done with a harvester (I'd like to have the sludge, and the goods from the sludge-boiler).

so how do I prevent the harvester from making me homeless (means: it should not chop down the tree where I live).

I do know, that I can build that farm outside, but I'd rather like to have it in the inside. ;-)

Short answer: Don't use a harvester! Get your sludge from something else. The way the harvester works is that if a log/leaf touches any wood/leaves within its scanning range, anything chained to those are fair game. So if a tree grows too tall/wide and touches the roof/sides...

But if you really want to risk it...
In Minefactory Reloaded's Common.cfg you will find:
# When searching for parts of a tree, how far out to the sides (radius) to search
I:SearchLimit.TreeMaxHorizontal=200

# When searching for parts of a tree, how far up to search
I:SearchLimit.TreeMaxVertical=256
I think these are the ones who control the "chaining" part of the harvester.

Use something other than a harvester for the tree farm, if just one leaf block touches the redwood your entire base will be chopped, could make an indoor wheat farm for sludge though

good to know.

I was afraid that it wouldn't be possible. so I think, I'll build an outdoor treefarm on top of the tree, and repurpose the inner treefarm-room for something else (wheat farm + twilight forest portal + nether portal and a few other things).

Or you could use facades from EnderIO to replace the bark blocks with facades painted to look like bark. That way your base would never be touching a tree and thus be safe.

never used them before, but they seem to be nice :)

the treefarm in its current way is obsolete, because I tested the farm-room and there was just the spot in the middle where a tree would even grow (apparently the MFR-rubbertrees check ceiling height and space in every direction, in order to fully grow the leaves).

but the conduit facades solve another problem: for a lot of machines, I would need to punch holes through the floors, leaving ugly windows between them. the facades would effectively hide them :)

Unless something has changed, DO NOT DO IT. It will eat your base. It only looks in a 3x3 initially, and then has an enormous 'where's the tree' range. It will knock down a fair part of a full size natura redwood, and well... It's gonna be ugly.
