Hey all. I've seen the Mod Spotlights and tutorials regarding the Modular Force Field System mod that's included in FTB. It looks really great, but I'm having a hard time conceptualizing what exactly its good for.

I made note of the Mod Defense mode, which kills all mobs within the field. That's good and useful. Also for multiplayer, the ability to protect a small area from griefing seems to be a valid use. Also something about being able to make underwater domes sounds really neat too. Someone mentioned to me something about a camouflage mode or something which was supposed to be pretty cool but I didn't see that on any of the tutorials. Oh, and also the obvious "keeps an exploding nuke from destroying your whole base" is a big benefit.

Mostly I'm just really curious about what the practical uses are for these devices, especially since the mod itself is so complex and involved. What's the benefits of the different projection shapes, etc. Tubes, and planes and lines of fields. These aren't speaking to me any sort of real use, other than "yep its a force field".

i think its better for a multiplayer but the uses are what you can come up with how about a force field and an eu detector so that it comes on automatically at night with the mob kill addon to protect you or for that super secret base entrance with the camo addon you know the ones inside of mountains with grass camo

I think you just have to be creative with it.

You just about listed all its uses. Aesthetic, nuclear reactor enclosure, mob killing. That's about it :)

Since all servers will run in Vanilla now, there wont be any protection addon like Towny or so. So the force fields will play a big role in protection!

I use a tube force field and two walls as "doors" to protect my base from any risks of nuclear reactor meltdown.
The tube is always on and protects my base, the doors are on the sides which leads to nothing that risks an explosion.
A normal force field could have been used, I just wanted to be able to keep the forcefield even if I come inside the reactor room.

If you have redpower it can also make a really powerful quarry with the block cutter upgrade.
I mine a 7x11 area in a flash, transposers to get the blocks, enderchests to send it to my base.
What takes the most time is moving the whole machine forward.

MFFS is also one of the few mods that let you make an underwater base.

Although I would prefer to make an entrance with frames, it is still nice to have a nice air dome when tryin to build.

You could even have fun and make a lava base^^

This is a video showcasing a build I did using support frames/motors and an MFFS Area Projector with Block Cutter and Underwater upgrades to mine a 15x15x1 section. Total time to move, mine, and gather is 4-5 seconds and represents probably the fastest controlled mining method I've seen in the game to date. The vehicle tends to slow down when mining up due to falling gravel, but it is capable of mining in all directions. I learned the hard way that having the Underwater upgrade in place means you can't have on-board thermopiles (derp) but a proper ender chest system feeding charged BT batteries into the battery boxes on the vehicle would work very well. I plan on making another one of these as priority in my first FTB world. They require a bit more babysitting than a quarry but they're much, much faster.

(You can skip to about the 12:30 minute mark in the video if you're only interested in the forcefield miner.)

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
Immature I know; but you can have a fair amount of fun in SMP with the camo upgrade (I think diamond ore still works in it), or without a target block its 100% invisible (goes well with the mobdefence upgrade, or as 4 walls around the spawn point)

As for quarries, I think the block cutter destroys some of the drops- so you only get about 20% mining efficiency. I usually build a plough shape out of block breakers, with a much smaller field at the front for the initial cut.
