Details of the issue Java is once again eating all of my memory. When I'm not running FTB, my memory usage is around 19-21%(does slowly increase over time, and at sometimes I've seen it idling at 40%). With FTB.. it shoots up to 97-99%. This makes it hard to get anything done.
I typically like having a single instance of Firefox running, with Discord, Skype, and Steam. All of these, don't use that much memory (as I have just said).
Now I typically use the Direwolf20 pack, and allocate half of my 8GB (as what I'm told to do). Yet with time, the usage shoots up like a rocket. Symptoms have been the game freezing up at random times (or being choppy) to my computer completely freezing up temporarily. I've also heard my sounds get choppy (to also sounding like my computer's about to BSOD any second but doesn't). And when the game does freeze, sometimes I see "Can't keep up!" with "Running 2129ms behind" (or higher, a few times it was over 10k).
I'm not afraid to install more memory (if I know it'll fix this problem), yet I hear from multiple sources that adding more will not help with the resource hog that is Java; for it's my CPU that does that. Yet its usage on load is between 45-60%, and 25-30% on idle. So the CPU isn't being taxed; it's the RAM. I even see more proof by looking at my Windows Task Manager's Performance tab, of seeing very little available memory (and 0 free).
I just want to know if adding at least 8GB more would help with this. And also, if a new 500 GB SSD to replace my aging 15+ year old 160GB C drive would contribute to said help. I know it would make Windows boot faster, but not having my entire computer lock up when trying to do something outside of the game, matters a lot more to me.
This isn't even a framerate problem. This is clearly a resource management problem with Java being a resource pig.
Lastly, I have considered moving my install to a server in hopes to lessen the stress on my hardware, but I don't know of any reasonable priced (yet also reliable) server packages out there that are designed for FTB, that's easy to understand and use, allows me to configure it for just me (and blacklist everyone else), and has infinite access. If you know of any, please don't hesitate to give me some links.
I don't have a second computer that I could use as a server, unfortunately. This is my only computer.
TL;DR: FTB's taking a huge chunk of my memory. Will adding more help (and what about an SSD to replace my C drive)?
Specs (if it helps);
OS: Windows 7 x64
CPU: AMD FX 4350
GPU: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 750Ti
RAM: (Mentioned in OP)
Java version: Java 8 (Update 111)
