With the exact same setting (2 GB RAM allocated to Java in the launcher) I can barely run a mod pack using FTB. For example I get about 10 FPS in Direwold20's 1.7.10 mod pack with about half the mods disabled but in ATLauncher I can run Resonant Rise 3 with 220 mods at 30-40 constant FPS. This happens on all of the FTB mod packs. What could the reason be for this?

Using Java 1.8. Same issue when using Java 1.7.

If you use Java 8 you don't need to change any ram settings for 1.7.10 packs, assuming you have enough ram installed in your computer.

For instance, ever since Vista Windows needs at least 2GB all by itself to run smoothly, although that's been cut down to about 1.5GB in Win7 and 8, unless you have integrated video which also needs a good chunk of system ram (separate video cards usually have their own ram). Any ram after that can be allocated to the client...

Client memory settings for DW20 (needed for Java 7) are Min. Ram 2GB, Max. Ram 4GB and Permgen 256MB, as suggested in the first post announcing the pack. These seem to be the defaults in Java 8 (I never had to make changes), although the settings seem to be dynamic and can resize on need.

Ok, but that doesn't answer my question. Why do all the FTB modpacks run very slow (even FTB Lite) but Resonant Rise 3 runs smoothly with 220 mods? I just want to play along with dire but I can't because of this issue. Even with the lowest video settings, same result.

Different settings.

Try using MultiMC for the FTB packs. I've been able to get an additional 10 FPS from doing that in the past.

We need more details then...

What is your hardware setup (RAM installed, CPU specs, GPU specs, etc.)
What Operating System do you have installed? Is it 64 or 32 bit?
Are you running any other software while playing MC?
Are you adding other mods? (Fastcraft works to speed my system up... I don't use Optifine but others have had luck with it)

I'd be willing to assume that Direwolf, like most 'Tubers/Twitchers has a fairly high-end system, and I know that Dire does do some editing, since he records a lot of his episodes during Soaryn's Twitch streams. He may be editing out some of the worse episodes of lag.
