So I just installed FTB on my new computer, which has much higher specs than my previous one [i7 2.7ghz core, 16 gb ram, compared to my previous i5 2.6ghz with 8gb ram]. However, as I'm writing this, it takes INCREDIBLY long to load up FTB infinity. I've started loading it 15 minutes ago, and it's still only at step 2 out of 7. It's also taking quite a lot of CPU usage without having anything to show for it either, which is very strange.

I have installed the latest x64 Java version on my computer before starting up FTB.

If anybody is able to help, please post.

Ah, I saw it was 1 by default. Moved this up to 8, and see what happens now. my previous computer had 4 RAM allocated to it and took about 5 mins to load it up.

Okay. If it loads faster, move it to 3 or 4. 8 is wayyyyyy too much unless you have a heavy resource pack/shader.

Don't worry Matt, this is why I took so much RAM. Making sure everything goes smooooothleeeeeeeeh.

But joking aside, everything works fine now :). Game started up within 2 mins. I allocated 8 ram to it, and it only uses 3 in my control panel, so no worries there yet.

Control panel? Is that a win8 thing? I still use win7

There is a big difference between using RAM and allocating it. Allocating it reserves it for a program so no other program can use it, but it does not mean the program will actually use it. And most common measurements of RAM consumptions only show the RAM usage. For example the Task Manager will only show the actual at the present time used memory. But the process can have loads more reserved.

Problem with reserving 8GB of RAM for Minecraft/JAVA is two pronged: First JAVA is crap at managing the large unnesesary pool of RAM and it will actually reduce your performance quite a bit. Second you might very well be choking the rest of your system. Allocating means reserving, so no other have access to that RAM. Add to it that JAVA always uses more than you allocate(up to about 50% more), you could very will be choking your OS to the point where it have to run its processes on your harddrive instead(this is massively slow ofc... And bandwidth would have to be shared with the loading of pack/chunks etc. that is on the same harddrive).

Bottomline: Reduce the allocated RAM to below 4GB, and in general as low as you can go unless you are running x512 texturepacks, shaders etc...

I know what 'allocating' means. But I know from my old laptop, that 4gb allocation on FTB Infinity is not enough. Right now, my FTB infinity is using 5.8gb RAM.

the whole point to having RAM set to no more then 4gb is due to when the ram is set higher the java GC will be a lot more noticeable and will cause performance problems

MC will almost always use more RAM than you allocate. And I know for a fact there is absolutely no need to allocate more than 4GB for Infinity unless you use a texture pack that requires more. Going above 4GB just chokes your system for RAM and causes garbage collection to go a little nuts. 3GB is typically plenty.
