I am using FTB Horizons, and for some reason I get lag spikes that occur with five seconds between them, during which not a single frame is rendered for two seconds. This occurs when I am standing still and even when I have the pause menu up, but not the main menu. When it's not spiking, I'm getting an FPS of 25, which is to be expected as this is a fairly old laptop. I have Optifine installed (via WorldCore-universal deletion workaround) and all the video settings set to their fastest settings, and autosave (known for the lag spike of death) set to 30 min. When playing FTB Lite with the same settings (and Optifine), I get a smooth 45 FPS, and no lag spikes. It is worth noting that hiding Rei's Minimap in Lite increases the framerate slightly, but I do not see the difference in FTB Horizons. Opening up Shift-F3 has shown that the majority of memory usage is used by "Unspecified". I have set my computer to Windows 7 Basic (turning off DWM), and closed all other programs whenever starting FTB, but the lag spikes are unaffected. What could be causing this?

EDIT: After turning on VSync, I get an FPS of 40, with spikes of only about one second, but they're still there. Turning off Advanced OpenGL is no help either.

I had this problem as well when i had my OLD laptop. The reason i emphasize "old" is because of the specs. In your description, you said you have an old laptop. That is your problem right there. FTB is what i like to call a "Resource Wh*re". Unless you have a decent computer, it just wont cut it. Your GPU will just choke because your CPU cannot deliver enough resources to it. FTB (Especially horizons) and the immense amount of mods, just sucks all the resources. Btw, how much RAM are you allocating? Also, Optifine is not supported by FTB and/or Forge. What this means is that optifine breaks a lot mods (in terms of their texture) when this happens, its like a chain reaction. It breaks vanilla textures. Hard to explain. When you play FTB, try turning off both, v-sync and Open-GL. This should help a little bit.

Hoped i helped!

Here's the specs, it's not too old (2011 I think):

Sony VAIO PCG-81114L
Intel Core i7 @ 1.73 GHz (8-Core)
4 GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 310M
Windows 7 64-Bit

I have 1.5 GB allocated for FTB. Should I increase that to 2.5?

I kept VSync on because of the increased FPS when I tried turning off Advanced OpenGL. I'll try again without Optifine.

Ok, so it is a decent computer :p In your desc. you said it was old, so i took it as it was weak lol How much RAM do you have? If you have 8 GB, you can increase it to 2.5. I usually keep it lower 4 GB. any higher, FTB starts to "act funny".

I turned off Optifine, and the spikes are gone, but the FPS dropped to about half. It's still playable, though.

What ever you like better, a more smooth, stable fps but its a little low, or moderate fps with lag spikes. Your choice :p Hope it was helpful

2.5 is good for ftb.

Maybe a bit harsh but get a new PC, I switched from Acer laptop to a gaming desktop and I now get 100+ fps difference.
