Making Biomass

What is the best item to use to make Biomass? I'm guessing Sugarcane? since your get multiple per plant? using water?

In 1.4.7, saplings are best. In later versions of forestry, the amount of biomass generated is based on the sappiness of the sapling. You have to breed trees to get the best saplings for converting into biomass. Normal saplings will not give as much biomass as they did in 1.4.7.

In reality, use anything you have extra of. Extra wheat, biomass. Extra sugar cane, biomass.

If you get 9 different types of plants, you can also use the MFR bio-reactor to make biofuel directly.

RandomMoped is correct saplings plus either honey or juice and either mulch or compost gives the most biomass. With the introduction of tree breading the new saplings provide even more if you put the effort into breading trees.

It depends. Saplings give the most per item, but aren't the easiest thing to farm, and give you a lot of waste products if they're the only thing you're looking for (though there's plenty you can do with wood, of course). Wheat could work, since you can ferment wheat directly and also turn seeds into plantballs. Cactus and sugarcane seem like good options (sugarcane more than cactus, probably), and they have no waste products to worry about.

Does anyone use mushrooms? They seem like they'd be the hardest to collect automatically, though maybe you could do something with a mooshroom spawning/shearing machine. Now that I mention it, I may have to try that just for novelty...

I personally have a large sugar cane farm, its 21x21 all with soilblocks. I have 4 levels with 2 sugar cane harvesters. it's more then enough ill ever use

if you use mfe tree farms, plantballs made out of sheered leaves are very good

I'm a fan of the wheat system as you can also double down and use it as your food source and if your running an animal farm you got seeds for chickens and wheat for cows all in one thing. Sapplings really are best if your doing the forestry thing as you can breed them to be super effecent.

If i'm running a wheat farm, I usually like to send the seeds off to become seed oil because by that point i've automated my alveary making.

theres that too. My point is I like using wheat becuase I can get more uses out of it as a product saving me space and time over all in my total base.
