I am just wondering what people prefer in the modded minecraft games, and how many people are totally into magic, technology or both.

For me I am mostly a tech geek. I love building machines in minecraft that do things, the more machines, the more enjoyment I have.

Tech. However, I really want to get into magic stuff such as Thaumcraft or Botania but I'm too lazy to build an extra room in my base to fit all the things.

I like both, although I've been a little more favorable towards magic mods in the latest generation of mods.

I tend more towards tech.

But the real question is, what is magic but a high level of technology?

I usually start with Tech, but once I'm settled I move into a magic system or two. Then I see how I can break the game by using them in fun conjunctions.

I prefer tech but I also like magic. I usually don't do both in the same play though

I prefer tech mostly because the magic mods seem to have a lot of front loaded tedium before you get to anything that is actually useful where as the tech mods go from usable to "wow I need more storage for all this refined material".

I stick mostly to magic, just because I like being able to see everything working, not just knowing that it is. Like a golem bringing items to a chest, rather than some pipe hidden in the wall.

I like both tech and magic myself, although I lean more towards the magical side if I get the choice about how to do things. (For example I love ore doubling with Thaumcraft if I can.)

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" - Arthur C Clarke, usually referred to as "Clarke's Third Law".

With that in mind, the difference between magic and tech mods is usually one of style. I experience magic as more personal, which I like, while tech usually offers more in the way of automation, which I also like. In the end, nothing beats making the most of the synergy between both.

Definitely tech. I don't know why but I've never been able to get really into any magic mods. The most I've ever done was research a ways into thaumcraft, and that backfired stupendously cause I really had no idea what I was doing.

You know, I personally prefer magic/medieval, but I finally got sick of the bugginess of AM2, and the way Battlegear 2 has terrible compatibility, and the way all of the Metallurgy ores seemed the same, so I decided to take a break and switch back to tech (which I enjoy as well). I like the idea of improving your character, and I like it as a separate idea from tech, which is improving your base (in my head). But it seems like the mods with the most potential for "improve your char" are buggy, i.e. Battlegear or AM2.
It always seems like playing with magic is like this: "Oh look, a magic modpack!" *plays with nothing except Thaumcraft*
I haven't played with Botania, but from what I've seen, I would need to append this line if I did: "Hey look, a flower - let's see what it does!" *fifteen minutes later, has found horrible exploit - or maybe even legit feature - between Botania and TC and is using it to create infinite diamonds*

... I *might* enjoy playing with magic and tech at the same time, but every pack with both seems to end up with 160 mods. You need about 100 mods to really make tech fun, and magic only adds more to the count - I've found that past 100 mods the lag starts. :p As a modpack creator, I've had a lot of experience with that, although most of my desperate lag-tests happened a while ago, so mods in general might be more efficient now.

Try Blood Magic at some point. It may fit what you're looking for here with very few bugs.
