MAC and java options

Am using apple java 6 and find they don't update that often. When using JRE 6 from oracle I had no issues but updated to java 7 and it caused me major problems with mine craft and FTB. Is there a way to use latest build from oracle on mac without it causing minecraft to crash ? and what would the recommended version be ?
