Optifine 1.4.7.
If you get the one you think it's better for you, you're golden (tip: put it as a coremod).

I also found that you can allocate more ram to the game but how much do I allocate?

Is this the first time you are running FTB on this laptop? And are you sure the laptop has a good dedicated video card, not only the integrated intel graphics?

If "no" for the second question, you may not have a video card powerful enough to run FTB at better framerates, sorry.
If both times "yes", you may have forgotten to make sure that FTB is actually displayed using the second, dedicated adapter. Sometimes, if the laptop does not choose the correct adapter by default, you will even have to add the "javaw.exe" (normally in: \program files\java\jre\bin) to the list of programmes that need to be run by the dedicated adapter (you do this via the video card's control panel applet).

Lucky for you, amount of memory means exactly shit in terms of client or server performance.
Look at Philo's post for more info.

That's incorrect. If you're only allocating the bare minimum to run, your performance is going to suffer. If you're allocating all of the possible RAM, your system will suffer, leading to your game suffering.
As per the Mojang support page, you should have a minimum of 2 GB of RAM to run just plain old Minecraft. Minecraft itself needs a minimum of 1/4 of a GB (256 MB) to run.
As per Microsoft, Windows 7 requires a minimum 1 GB of RAM. Windows Vista requires 512 MB. Windows XP requires 64 MB. (All x86/32 bit requirements)
Those are just the operating systems.
If he only has 3 GB of RAM, the processes using up his RAM will make his performance suffer.

Java is CPU intensive. Minecraft is GPU intensive.

If his laptop only has 3 GB of RAM, he's not going to get better than probably 30 FPS, at best. (Quick google search of laptops with 3 GB of ram gave this result)

I understand your point, but what I mean is that with any modern OS and the default memory settings for FTB he should be fine memory wise.

A gig for the OS, a gig for FTB, a extra gig for background stuff.
