Low FPS; judge my specs, throw me some tips?

So I've been perusing through the information out there about FTB and was stupidly psyched about giving it a try, but when I did my low FPS made playing simply unbearable. This struck me as a little disheartening considering how I can run vanilla perfectly fine and Tekkit classic only starts choking up in heavily-built up areas. My specs as follows:

• Computer: Lenovo Thinkpad e530
• Processor: Intel Core i5
• Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000
• Windows 7 64bits
• Java version 7 update 21
• RAM: 8gb DDR3

I recently upgraded my RAM from 4 to 8 in the hopes that it would help improve my performance; it did not. I'm now laying my eyes on my graphics card which is, to my dismay, integrated. Is this where my problem lies, and is there some way I could juice more power out of it?

What FTB pack are you trying to run, your talking about vanilla and Tekkit Classic (which have alot less mods then most of the FTB packs).

I did find on the notebook of my nephew (an i3 no idea which one) that installing and setting up optifine right made it alot better for him to play FTB.
It will take some time to find the settings that work. But eventually it will work
