Hey guys. Looking to set up a mob farm hopefully soon, but want to use blocks that can act as player entities to kill the mobs and soak up the xp with a brain in a jar. My original plan was to use sentries from portal gun. ... I'm not sure those would actually drop xp from mobs though.

So far the list includes:
- Turtles
- Iron Golems
- Splash potions thrown by RP Deployers

Thats about it

But you should note Iron Golems the vinnila ones don't drop xp. Its the Advanced Thuamcraft ones that do that.

The simplest code is:

Code:
while true do turtle.attack() end

Fill it's inventory with something the mobs don't drop and they'll never pick anything up. Feed items into a transposer, or use water to move them to a collection point for a wooden golem to scoop up, or use obsidian pipes, etc.
Sorry, that's wrong. If you fill their inventory, they will still pick up items, but spit those items out behind them (or into a chest).

Be warned that I'm encountering an issue at the moment where the turtles are causing me damage when i'm standing behind them! I think it's a sign of the turtle revolution - turtlenet slowly getting closer...

A good option for anyone else looking is the Mechanical Saw from Cogs of the Machine if you don't mind adding a mod, since the last update they kill mobs and have the XP drop they also kill mobs fast and are a block rather than an entity.

They'll never pick up mob drops into their inventory such that you have to explicitly tell them to drop things. "Sorry".

I recently just made a mob farm with turtles, and they were picking up mob drops before they even hit the transposers in front of them. If I filled up their inventory with junk (like cobble), they still collect the mob drops, but eject it out of their "rear".
In the end, I told the turtles to spit out anything in their first 4 inventory slots into the transposers in front of them, leaving the remaining turtle inventory slots filled with junk.

I have 4 turtles around a 1 block hole- water pushes mobs into the turtles at the top. The drops fall into the water and down the hole to be collected. No problems so far, all the drops and experience comes through as you'd expect. I don't really ever look up there so it's very likely that the turtles are sucking up an dropping things, but it all gets fed into the water so I don't notice.

Ah, in that setup, that could be the difference, as the drops at hitting the water straight away, and I guess the turtles "see" them as something they shouldn't collect, compared to a system where the water pushes the mobs to the turtles.

If you don't mind installing another mod, Minefactory Reloaded has a mob grinder block that can kill mobs and produce mob essence, which can be piped to an autoenchantment table (also from MFR).

I built an experience farm with an advanced iron golem (basic) and it didn't drop any experience. has this been nerfed?
