So far I've just build small setups that are all near each other so I don't have to worry about unloaded chunks.

At the moment I need to expand and get more oil. The closest oil spout I have found is 400 blocks away from where I have most of my stuff setup and I do not want to move.

If I put a pump on the oil and connect via waterproof transport pipe to my main location...with the chunk the pump is on stay loaded, so if I'm at my main base...the oil will keep flowing?

Guess what I'm getting at, for future reference, when building things far apart...are there any special concerns I should have or actions I should be taking in order to make sure everything works, or am I going to have to put a chunk loader next to all of these remote locations if i want them flowing while I'm at my main base?

All chunks that have pipe connecting the pump will need to be chunkloaded as well.

For this situation, you should look into liquid tesseracts, or ender tanks. You then only need to load one chunk.

But if I went with tesseracts, do they keep the chunk loaded themselves, or will I still need some sort of chunk loader at the remove area? (never used chunk loaders, so don't even know what one to use, etc).

You would need a chunk loader. Use the chunk loader, not a World anchor.
The chunkloader is yellow, if that would help ya figuring out which to use.
Right click on the chunkloader and you can increase/decrease and you can increase/decrease the area it should chunkload.
You can also enable "Show lasers" which will show you with laser what area its loading. (so you can make sure that its loading the right chunk)

awesome, thanks for the help.

Last question...does using chunkloaders add a considerable amount of lag? I've got 5.5gigs on my server at the moment, so plenty to spare right now. But for future planning...I'm guessing it would be wise to limit the use of chunkloaders? Lag wise, are they negligible...or is it pretty much just like having another user on the server since they are keeping the chunks constantly loaded?

It adds a very minor bit of memory/CPU load. The issue is when you load hundreds of chunks, which end up adding as much as another user. But a simple two chunk setup should be fine.

To clarify: A user loads hundreds of chunks. If you place the pump and stuff correctly, it loads one chunk.

Also, I have a server for me and another person, we have multiple chunk loaders usually loading 9 chunks, and a pair of quarries which load 34 chunks ( 16 chunks each quarry is digging and 1 chunk both quarries are inside. ) and we only have 1.5 gigs of ram on the server.

Remember to do nightly restarts and backups and youll probably never have an issue at 5.5 gigs.

Press F9 twice and you clearly see the chunk boundaries btw.
