Launcher works but game doesn't start

Hey all, I've been an avid minecrafter for a few years now, so I'm no stranger to having to tweak stuff around to get an installation to run, but this time I'm completely stumped. I've downloaded a fresh launcher, and downloaded fresh versions of each modpack but just cannot get any of them to load. The launcher seems to be doing everything its supposed to be doing but when I try to load a modpack it just sits at the launcher with all the buttons greyed out and does nothing. No crash, it just sits there forever.

System specs:
64-bit Ubuntu 13.10 Os
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ × 2
GeForce 9500 GT/PCIe/SSE2
3 gigs ram
120 gig HD

I've forum crawled for a week now trying all the fixes I can find but nothing works. Any ideas?
