Hey

I enjoy all the modpacks out there. Atm i play on my own Monster server, we are two players on a server with the following specs:

  • 3584MB RAM
  • 53GB HDD
  • 2 cores CPU
  • Unlimited * Data Transfer
  • Virtual Server Platform
Everything is hosted on CreeperHost

Specs to my computer:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD4, P55, Socket-1156
GPU: GK PC PCIe HD7970 3GB
CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-750 Processor
RAM: Corsair 8GB (KIT) DDR3 1333MHz/CL9/1,6V./XMS3
HDD: SSD 128GB Samsung SATA 2.5'', Retail 830-Series
HDD2: HD500GB WD SATA2 32MB Caviar, Black, 7200RPM
PSU: Corsair HX 650W PSU

I get quite low FPS when playing, it lags and dont feel the chunks loading fast enough.

First, is it my computer or server that is slow to host and run Monster pack really well?
If it is my computer, what should i upgrade to get much higher FPS and smoother gameplay?

Currently i get 18-30 FPS and it does not feel smooth and fast when using GUI of machines etc.

My internet speed should be good

(swedish speed test service) I pay for 100mbit/s and get above.

Happy for any help i can get.

Have you used Opis yet? It has the ability to diagnose server and client side issue. You might want to try that first to see if it server or not. Also, most FPS lag is usually client side. However, you mention problems inside the GUI of a machine. That type of lag is usually server side.

I do use OPIS and i cant see anything that is wrong really.
Sometimes a bit much entitys other than that it is fine.
The ping on each tick is 20 as it should be.

Opis won't help you at all with frame rate. Opis is for handling server lag/tick rate. Your server should be fine.
FPS loss is caused mostly by your own computer.
Primary things that I would think causing fps loss: Being in an area with LOTs of animated blocks/things happening. Large advanced bases in FTB tend to get a little frame lossy. Also, some people have serious frame rate lag when they use a shader. Though you didn't mention if you're using one, and from your computer specs I think you'd probably be fine. FPS lag/ choppy performance can be caused by network lag as well.

hm, i have most of my graphic settings really really low.
how come i still cant get FPS over 30 and experince the game as laggy.

if my computer now is good enough to run monster with high fps, what can i do to get that FPS.

Well what does the server run? How many chunk loaders? And there are other things could lag the server with ease.

Im more worried about my FPS

It could very well be your CPU. It's very old and wasn't very good in the first place, java and minecraft being very CPU bound...

Not likely. Laptops are terrible. A given CPU or GPU in a laptop is equivalent to a desktop from about 2-3 generations ago.

Where is your server hosted, and where do you live? ( I'm assuming Sweden by the whole swedish speed test thing. ) Light only travels so fast, and electricity is much slower. Being far away from your server can cause really high pings, really fast. Just ask anyone from Australia or New Zealand. High ping would cause delays on every action, such as opening a chest.

As for the FPS: That CPU is probably fine. It's faster than mine, and I do just fine. Sure, it wouldn't hurt to upgrade, but don't think it's terrible by any means. ( Mine was actually over $1,000 when I bought it in 2006... <sigh>, really do need to upgrade mine though. )

What kind of stuff is in your base? How much? Is it stacked, or spread out?

If you build a stacked base, your computer will render everything. Try putting any farms, power generation, etc. far away. Anything passive. ( It needs to be more than 7 chunks away usually, depending on settings. ) A common idea is different Mystcraft ages.

Ha, ha ha ha. I'm sorry but I got my laptop 3 years ago and only over the last year have I had to downgrade to mid grade graphics settings. At the time it was only a good midgrade, $1300, laptop as well. Purchased and spec'd with gaming in mind though.

The computer upgrade cycle has slowed to such a degree that laptop gaming is more than viable these days.

I never said it wasn't possible to play games on a laptop. I have had several ( I was in the Army, so no choice a lot of the time. ), but my point still stands. The laptop has to have WAY higher specs to match a desktop.

With new consoles out now, we will see a significant leap in requirements again. ( We already are in fact. Quad core and 64-bit are both becoming minimum specs now, as well as higher end video cards. ) Granted, after that I expect to see a significant lull again. With this new generation of consoles being so much weaker than anticipated, a large portion of the gaming industry won't push graphics nearly as much this time around.
